Copper State 1000 stopping for lunch.... ( I have no idea why the pics are sideways. I guess you just pick up your monitor and hold it sideways.)

I was surprised to learn they ran so many of those in the Carrera. In the early years it was big American V8 cars - Cadillacs and Lincolns - plus a handful of these tiny little Porsche 550's.
I think these Stude Hawks were in the V8 class, but smaller lighter more maneuverable through the mountain passes.
I looked them up - they had V8's in 259, 289, 352 with various power ratings. The classic big engine in a light car, years before the Pontiac GTO. Quickest American car you could buy in 1956.

La Carrera Panamericana
Studebaker Hawk spotting at 2:20. Lot of great cars in the modern resurrection of the race. A lot of this is still run on open roads, with traffic. Insane. Amateur adventure drivers, rolled cars, it's pretty wild.

Volvo Amazons have raced the Carrera!
This is good (and lots of Studebakers!)
Did you also know this is where Porsche first used the word Carrera on their cars? From racing tiny little 1300s and 1500s across Mexico in the early 50s.

Another 122 raced the Carrera - Apple Farmers Racing from Washington. Along for the trip was the Volvo Whisperer himself, our departed friend Oddvar Ogland.
That's him in the back....
