Did the axles this weekend

Post by Smash »

Not too bad of a job - 3rd car I've done and it went pretty straightforward. The boots were shot about 5 months ago and just now started making noise.

Pep Boys had the axles for about $60 each, fairly cheap I thought. Direct replacement.

I noticed that the boots are split on both lower ball joints, as well as the tie rod ends.

Anyone know a good source or back to Pep Boys? The joints seem OK but how do you replace just a boot? Pep B wants $50 for the lower joints (ea) and I don't know their tie rod price - they are curved so I'm sure they are pricey.

Guess that will be my post-christmas project!

Tonight I took out the center console (again) as the bulb in the shifter area jiggled out of it's solder I put on last time. I decided I'd take out the console and solder again, except I did a better job this time, with wires, etc. Hopefully that bulb works for good, not seeing what gear you are in a night is a pain!

Now if I just could get a cheap Volvo amplifier......

Do you (DIY) folks have any projects going on? Not much going on here lately.

House weekend for me this weekend, painting the primary color X 2 coats so wish me luck.

Glad to hear the axles went ok. Are they really that cheap? Rebuilt or new?

Gotta caulk the house's exterior for rainly season (now). :(

The axles are new - yeah I am surprised how cheap axles are, but that's generally for any FWD vehicle. Interesting that a lower ball joint is only $15 less than the entire axle......

Yeah my house is caulked pretty good, paint is just faded. It's all one color now, beige. I'm going with a lighter beige and do the trim white, that'll be the big part. We just hit the good weather here in Florida, I was waiting for a break from the 90 degree days and this week we finally got the high 78's, low 50's weather. Late for this year, for sure.

TTYL.
