I have a 2015.5 XC60 T5 front wheel drive. I squeaked in under the grace period for warranty piston & ring replacement with both vehicle age and mileage. Since then I haven't burned a drop of oil in about 15K miles. Recently I was overwhelmed by the rotten egg catalytic converter smell on one short drive. I show no codes or misfires. It has not happened since but it got me to thinking, how much damage was done to the cat burning all that oil before the piston replacement?
I went under the car to have a look and that cat is really tucked in there tight. Can the cat be replaced without pulling the engine? If it can be done with the engine in place how involved is it? I've been working on my own cars for over 50 years so I'm not afraid of a fight but I'm not sure I want to be pulling an engine these days. Thanks.

A call to the dealer and muffler shop would provide that precise info. Most people don't change the exhaust on that new of a vehicle. If you have to pull the engine for a CAT it would only have one live in my book and would be gone.
