Side repeater conversion on 96 850

Post by 454cid »

I've been thinking and talking about this for awhile and I'm finally getting going on it.

I've had the side lights for quite awhile in my parts stash. I bought Pro Parts Sweden lights in amber since I think they'll go better with my gold paint than the clear would have. My S70 had clear.

I've also got some led "bulbs" I can use. Those were an Amazon purchase for my truck and I have a number left still.

Tonight, I pulled off the Volvo badges. They came off much easier than I thought they would. I used a plastic putty knife that I've had in my tool box for quite some time.

I still need to remove the residue from the foam tape. I already have an eraser wheel. I just need to move the car closer to an outlet or charge batteries.

I was pleased that the emblems were not damaged at all.

Here are a few pictures.

Does your car have the wires tucked up behind the fender? The young guy I was helping last year with his 96 850 base had wires behind the fenders. I seem to recall we could see then looking forward between the door pillar and the fender.

That's a great question. I'm not sure. I can see and hook a wire, but it doesn't seem to want to move.

That's my flashlight sticking through the hole in the fender and viewed through the hinge area.

Is that RH or LH fender? If it is LH that may be part of the Evap system pipework to the outlet valve. I recall the wires I say were just 2 wires and a connector. I understand not all cars were fitted with wires for some reason. There are those who had retrospectively added wires removed from V/S/C 70's.

The pictures are from the left hand side. If I don't find wires, I was planning on splicing into the existing wires at the front turn signals. Is there a better place to do that? Where do the factory wires connect?

I did this installation on my '97 a few years ago and spliced into the front turn signals, just as you're suggesting above. Has been working well with no issues, and can recommend this approach. Good luck!

quick semi-OT question, but anyhow:
On the US models, the front ambers are on all the time and interrupt when using the turn signal. Are the repeaters on the front fenders on all the time as well?
At least that's how it was on my Lincoln and my Chevy.
Ours over here in Europe are off all the time until you use them.

Ours are only a single filament bulb, and are only wired into the turn signal circuit. They're only on when using the turn signals/hazard flashers and when the lights flash when locking the car with the central locking.

Didn't get outside today before work, to work on the 850. The next step is to get the tape residue off with an eraser wheel. I'm thinking that I may try to soften it up with a heat gun first. It's awfully dried and hard.

Hopefully some "cleaner wax" on the paint will make any shadows disappear.
