Or clay bar for residue cleanup... heat gun is a good idea. IIRC, that's what I used. Here's my 850 side marker signals DIY.

I got all the glue off the driver's side easily enough, but the passenger side doesn't seem to want to fully come clean. I think that fender was repainted and I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I've searched as best as I can for existing wires and unless Volvo really hid them well, my car must not be prewired. I decided to go ahead and put the driver's side on place without wiring it. I'm not sure I like the look. I'm tempted to reinstall the Volvo badges.

Sigh, it looks like my phone focused on the reflection. I don't have the clay bar (although I think I might get some) so I used the cleaner wax that I have.

That's a possibility. I think I have a white one that I could try. I'd have to buy some amber LEDs, but that's not a big deal.

Well I kind of like it. I think they would have looked nicer if designed with a lower profile, but still not bad.
I've been back and forth with doing this myself. Seems apparent that Volvo must have been thinking about this all along, otherwise they wouldn't have made the cut-out for them in the first place.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

I found the white light that I pulled from my S70 and put it on the passenger side. It didn't really seem to be an improvement. It still stands out to me. The white is too light and the amber is too dark. I think the amber light being so much darker than the front turn signal is what bothers me. Maybe I'll get used to it.

Before I purchased my 850 the previous owner had fitted white side markers. IMO they look naff so one of the first things I did was replace them with the original amber lights which were supplied with the car
