It’s kinda hard to tell the size but I think for the large black thing, a bunch of vacc and other lines snap into it. It is on the right side of the engine between the block and lower radiator hose. Below the upper engine Mount.

connects to the fuel line above the intake manifold. Let me know if you need a photo of its placement.

Update on the car - I've put over 100 miles on it now with some highway driving. No issues with the engine to report, not a single leak and it seems to run perfect.

I was driving to work the other day when it suddenly died, this had me very concerned something was wrong but it turns out it was just out of gas! This is with the gauge showing over 1/4 tank. I filled the tank and there is a strong odor of gas in the cabin so I imagine I'll need to fix the pump or sending unit.

The fuel pump recall may still be active and applicable to your car. Check it out.

I called Volvo North America and they were not keen on fixing the fuel pump. Is there a magical string of words that will unlock their charity?

Does it say on https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls that you have a recall for the fuel pump? If so, just tell them that’s what they are fixing and schedule an appointment. You may also be able to make an appointment online. If it doesn’t show up on the governments recall site, I’m not sure if you can get them to fix it for free.

i have a 2004 v70, it wasn't on the recall list.
fixed it with chemical resistant jb weld....5 yrs ago, still good.
disconnect the battery before pulling seats out or you will surely get the srs warning light to add to your problems.

the gas guage problem is usually because the pump float is oriented wrong, the float arm has to swing laterally front to rear.
i installed one slightly out of line and got the same readings as you have.

if the only time you smell gas is after filling up then the pump lock ring is loose and the whole pump is misaligned, i did that too.
same routine, disconnect battery, reposition the pump, lubricate the big seal and tighten it up good....or get a new seal.

my pump was cracked, i dont think yours is.

I tried to get Volvo to cover the cost of fuel pump replacement through the local dealer and VCNA but they are tired of arguing with me. I think it should be covered based off of the original extended "warranty" that was offered which was later updated to a "Recall" SB220A. I'll end up replacing it myself.

I have been reading through the chronicles of CEM pin decoding. This car did not come with a keyfob when I bought it, and I'd really like to get one. Seeing as the dealer isn't happy with me, and I'm looking at ~$400 to get the fob and have it programmed, I'd like to explore other options. It appears VDASH can program a FOB if I have the correct codes and the CEM pin. Finding the pin with a dodgy J2524 seems sub optimal, so I was exploring the Teensy option. Does this work on an 02 P2 XC70? What are the chances of bricking the CEM? I would be very sad if that happened.

You get ten years from the date of those recalls, anything after that is goodwill only.

Threads about bypassing Volvo to get pins and program fobs fall silent when asked about results. I don’t think people like to admit defeat

I understand the dealers position, but the service bulletin for the latest fuel pump "recall" does say the work should be performed regardless of car age or mileage.

It does seem like that, though VDASH claims to be able to program new fobs.
