Server move coming up

Post by matthew1 »

I do this about every 3 years. All the data from the forum (phpBB) and Repair Database (Wordpress) moves onto a new server, with new/updated OS (Debian, in our case), software (php, Nginx, MySQL, ssh, phpBB, Wordpress, etc.). Each will be a fresh/latest version for speed and security.

I've found this to be my preferred method to update software... just move the fam into a new house every time.

Last time it was a Google Cloud VM to a new Google Cloud VM. This time the new house is going to be on Digital Ocean, physically hosted in NYC.

In order of appearance, since I've been using VMs for MVS in 2009:

Slicehost (x1 or x2, I forget)
Rackspace (a forced move because RS bought SH, but it was transparent to me)
Dreamhost (x1, I wasn't impressed)
Google Cloud (x2 or x3, I forget)

Also, and importantly from a server admin perspective, I'm going to put MVS back under the Cloudflare umbrella of protection and speed features, but that'll come a week or so after the server move. First things first.

I need to rehearse the database export/import/test again to be somewhat certain I won't cause myself 14 hours of mad fixing/backtracking/DNS freakouts, but I think it'll be tomorrow, Saturday. MVS might be down for 1-2 hours, and possibly more if you live far away from a major Internet backbone. I'll display a notice here so you'll know when we're going dark for the upgrades.

And when I say "MVS will be down," I mean to say MVS will be read-only for 1-2 hours (probably), and then next time you refresh, magically, it'll be normal. Your job is to sit on the couch with a beer and pretzels and hit the refresh button.

Not to go on and on about this esoteric thing that 99% of you don't (and shouldn't) care about, but I'd also like to add: these server moves are very fun for me. The responsibility is high, I've got people (you) counting on me to not f it up, and if it does go actually dark (bad, bad, and if this happens I did something stupid) for more than a brief window of several hours, Google will start chipping down MVS search rankings.

It's incredibly rewarding, and it'll leave us with a completely updated array of software where I'll feel good modifying to make features better. I don't want to do much when we're at the end of our 3-year cycles because I'll need to drag modifications from the old pieces and put them in the new pieces, and sometimes the code around those two places is different, which complicates it. Wordpress is much more forgiving to this backfilling thing, phpBB is terribly outdated and difficult.

I think I can go a few hours without posting to MVS. Certain New England super moderators may need to be sedated.

Sounds like something best enjoyed as a spectator sport. I need to chase a random misfire anyway.
