Unless you are using the phone as a GPS, do as I do and leave it in your pocket or in the glove box. Problem solved!
I have fitted a bluetooth head unit in my Toyota which allows programming of the steering wheel buttons. That way I need absolute minimum eyes off the road. For our 2 Volvo's no Bluetooth so phones not in use while driving.
As for GPS, seldom use it but I have a windshield stick-on Garmin that works fine.
Neil.
where do you keep your phone in your 850?

I use magnetic ones that clamps on the vents in all my cars, the V70 and the Subie have thick enough vents to support them.
The 940 however has thin ones (similar to an 850iirc), which eventually broke off. To avoid breaking them again when I replaced the vent, i made a small 3d printed support to replace the clamp that just slides between the horizontal vents from behind. It does stop them from being adjustable, but i dont really mind it.
Cant find a picture so here's the 3d model

I'm going to have to try that. It's not often I have to use GPS, but every once in a while I get to go someplace besides work.ZionXIX wrote: ↑06 Apr 2024, 17:08I have done that in the past for navigation. So I bought one of these clamp to the vent units, but the vents just don't support the weight of the phone. So Instarted hacking and came up with a nice solution that has the phone near enough to speak while driving and have Waze online to warn me of speed traps.
I used a blank switch hole cover and mounted half the phine mount to it. I just had to relocate some of the switches a bit.

The best mounts are from Kuda. They are fiberglass, custom designed for each year/make/model, wrapped in leather which matches interior trim. I had one on my 2002 Mercedes E320 and it looked like a factory accessory. Their 850 mounts appear to be available, including a lovely side mount. I remember buying one from a USA based branch of Kuda, not the German site I linked, so look around for that. I mounted a ProClip holder to the base by carefully drilling mounting holes into its fiberglass frame, then using screws and nuts with threadlock to hold it in place.
The 850 mount which similarly goes over the vents, #852127, appears to be still available. The side mount one which ZionXIX mentioned appears gone. Anyone who wants it might try asking ProClip if they could still make one, since I suspect they make the old ones on demand. VPrints, maybe this is a part you could redesign. ProClip cuts their mounts out of thick slabs of plastic, gluing them together as necessary. I bet they stopped making the 850 side mount one because it required too much gluing and demand was too low.
ProClip is great, offering dashboard mounts designed for each specific year/make/model of car. I have been using one in my 2000 V70s since I first got the car in 2002. The model I use, #852426, snaps into the trim gaps above and below the air vent, blocking some of it. A totally fine trade off since it puts the phone up close to the windshield requiring minimal eye movement from the road. I ordered two more last year so they are available, though took a while to arrive.

I put mine in the ashtray too, nice and secure there.
Long term though I plan to have my dashboard/dashpad repaired and I'm considering a permanent mount for either a phone holder or some sort of Android Auto screen. Either flip up from the center, over the vents, or maybe something in front of the A/C controls since they mostly don't work.
The first option I feel is better in terms of field of vision, the second would look like a cleaner install.

I have a Belkin MagSafe holder that sticks to the ac vent. With my MagSafe it works perfectly. No need to fiddle with the clamp. I see products that sticks to the windshield but I like mine that sits right in front the vent since phone can overheat easily from the sun. The holder cools down my phone very well.
