I agree with jmartin and use the CTA 2489. It grabs the 1999-2000 plastic filter cover perfectly (unless the cover is banged up). For reinstallation, I can put my torque wrench on it and tighten it to spec (written on the plastic cover, I believe). Yes it's bulky, but I store it nestled inside my CTA oil funnel which I also recommend.

I did finally use the Craftsman metal filter remover linked above, but on a pickup truck. It took a little getting used to but it worked. Still have to try it on my 1998 whose filter has been on for seven years now.

Seven years? Say it ain't so! Moose abuse will lead to a Moose attack leaving you stranded and the worst for wear ?

The car has driven maybe 1500 miles in that time; 1400 miles and six years under previous ownership, 100 miles and one year under mine. I'll get to it someday, it's patiently waiting.

Is the 1998 T5 the plastic/ insert type or the metal can, Firefox?

I’ve found the metal cans rust in a few years in Salt country. I’ve had two blow out on top with Mann filters

The 1998 T5 is the metal can. Let's hope I can remove it. Are any 1998's not the metal can?

A followup & appreciation: the plastic filter housing successfully removed.

Seems like the trick this time was cleaning the oil and grime off the filter housing with some iso alcohol and then using a slightly longer and sturdier oil filter band-type tool borrowed from local mechanic with a rag wrapped around the filter to improve grip.

The longer handle on the tool was key to applying leverage accurately. Also props to my pops for finding the right tool.

-Other attempts included buying a filter wrench(local store didn't have my size), hose clamp and hammer (not enough room to swing), cursing and taking a nap (mentally useful)
Thanks for all the ideas, I also bought the appropriate filter wrench for future oil changes

It was so much work you fell down in the grass (but managed to take a photo with your last bit of strength). Thanks for your tips.
