Fan doesn't come on with AC

Post by Alexjordan22 »

1994 850 2.4 NA. Like the title states the fan does not come on right away when I turn on the AC. It will cycle off and on as needed. This is my first Volvo but usually as soon as I turn the AC on in a car the fan comes on with it. What could cause that?

Do the AC lights on the dash flash when you switch it on? When was it last re-gassed?

The AC light comes on solid when switched on. It didn't work at all when I bought it, so I put some freon in along with some dye to find a leak and it's been working okay ever since, but it does quit working intermittently when stopped it seems. Some drives it doesn't skip a beat but today it was a nice 85 degrees and it stopped working 2 or 3 times on my drive home from work

I'm not sure if the fan is supposed to immediately turn on when the AC is engaged.

The AC cutting out intermittently could be due to a compressor clutch gap that has worn too large for engagement. You can measure the clutch gap and adjust it tighter with shims if it is too large.

Ok I'll look into that clutch gap. Thanks
