I figured it might be worth trying to at least help things out before I drop the pan. My main worry is if there's a risk of creating leaks, damaging seals, moving sludge where it doesn't belong etcbmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 07:30 A flush chemical like BG EPR would work well to at least help break things down, but as I learned the other day, it's best to go ahead and drop the pan to manually clean things. As long as you clean everything really well and apply the anaerobic sealant evenly, you should be just fine!RedBrickCollector wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 07:42I figured it might be worth trying to at least help things out before I drop the pan. Ah my concern was for a flush!bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 07:49 As long as you clean everything really well and apply the anaerobic sealant evenly, you should be just fine!
For dropping the pan it's more of schedule, space, and waiting for parts. While we're talking about it, the step I usually see where you disconnect the motor mount and put a chunk of wood below, is that to get clearance needed to remove the pan or can it be skipped if you can somehow access the bolts without doing such?

The mount blocks the pan from coming down, so it needs to be pulled out of the way. Even with it out, I had to mess with the hard fuel line a little bit to maneuver the pan into place.RedBrickCollector wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 07:54Ah my concern was for a flush!bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 07:49 As long as you clean everything really well and apply the anaerobic sealant evenly, you should be just fine!

Ah, I see your concern about the flush though... typically they don't cause any leaks, and if so, those seals were about ready to let go anyway.

Okay great info. Did you have to raise the engine somehow or was removing the mount enough?bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Jun 2024, 08:13 The mount blocks the pan from coming down, so it needs to be pulled out of the way. I spent last week and the week before preparing Harold for a trip from Connecticut to Denver, Colorado. My kid and her boyfriend are going to spend the summer there and if they find jobs may stay for a while longer
A bunch of stuff needed to be done: oil change, tranny drain and fill, new wiper arms and wipers, front brakes, rear pads, air filter, cabin filter and more little stuff. Because I was running out of time I had my indie do a pass tie rod and a driver side control arm as well as addressing a CEL because of an EVAP leak. My daughter took him to the dealer for an alignment.
I also had to do some rust repair behind a mudflap. After that I installed new mudflaps and the kid even refinished all the trim. And of course I installed Matt's hitch for the bike carrier ( yes Matt, it's coming back to you ! )
Last Friday their belongings were all packed up and they were ready to go. Quite a bit of weight Harold has to carry.
First leg was to cross into Ohio which is were they stayed one night. Next was Chicago were they stayed 2 nights with a friend. They left there this morning and are due to arrive in Omaha shortly. Tomorrow is the last leg to Denver. So far Harold is doing great.
A big thank you again to Matt for providing the hitch, and to Abscate who carried the thing on an airplane to get it to me. Just incredible!!

You quite clearly haven't seen a picture of Roberts' 850 wagon. This isn't his regular mule, but representative of the usual load. It was a good ten minutes to get to this point, and half the stuff he pulled out went into my car; the few things I had for him didn't move the needle much.

We noticed it was aluminum and took a little more care. Definitely need to apply anti seize on those splines with an aluminum to steel connection. Will order a new bolt, it looks like there was supposed to be a little cotter pin.
Rack turned out to have been a rebuilt unit, found some scary rust under one of the subframe mounts, but as the saying goes, a grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't.
Wow, that's quite the trip. I get separation anxiety about a car that's just spending a month with my sister down in the city, 1.5hr away.

Noticed a new leak today. Looks like water, wet spot is around the back of the engine in like with the driver (LHD). Are there any common leaks here? Turbo water line?
