Transmission removal help needed - 2013 XC60 T6 AWD

Post by scot850 »

Starting to plan the trans swap. Just wanted to see if anyone had done this before. I have read the Vida instructions which make it look remarkably simple (understatement I think). The one thing it does mention is the use of 2 special tools. One is a crank pulley hold tool to help turn the engine over to access the flex plate bolts. Part number is 999 7257:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... tools-7068

Typical, most places seem to be out of stock except a few in the US. Can't find this tool in Canada unless the dealers can supply it. Last time I asked to buy a tool they told me they were not allowed to. Must be a change in policy as I have bought tools from them in the past.

I'm assuming the crank pulley does not have the normal Volvo crank pulley nut (32 or 36mm). Does anyone know if this is needed to remove the trans or can it be done without it? Expensive tool for potentially one use at around $80-100 US + shipping.

There was another tool listed but I think it is a special mount for a trans jack. Can't find reference to it anywhere on line. I think we can manage without that one.

Thanks,

Neil.

Well it looks like the trans is ordered but won't get here until the end of the month. Must be coming on a 3 legged camel via South Africa?!

...ha-ha...

And the camel's driver's Supervisor must be a snail, too
Patience is key.
By the time you get the replacement, your condemned transmission might as well miraculously heal.

I wish for my friend that would happen, but having heard what the 'specialist' shop has done to it including the brutal use of a large slide hammer there is little to zero chance of that ever happening. It won't stop be still having a look and see, but I don't have the room to store a car for that long. Also as the transmission is a closed type, it means no access to from removing the RH axle and hitting from the opposite side. I'm thinking the only way it may be salvaged is to remove the trans and try to drill the axle out without damaging the splines and then collapse the remainder inwards to remove it. The split ring may still be an issue.

Sorry you have to go through all this.
It hurts to hear that the stealership would make a customer absorb the cost of replacing the transmission which was ruined by their highly skilled mechanic's ignorance...

I would hire my neighbor's Mother-in-law to teach them a lesson...

Eek! Scary thought!

It wasn't the dealership but a proclaimed Volvo 'specialist'. They have been around with the same owner for years. Owner is cranky know-all and a pain in the a$% to deal with. I refuse to deal with him. I'd rather work with the 2 dealers as at least they still have a few good mechanics and staff around I know. We have had 'issues' over the years, but they were eventually resolved and we move on.

The real issue here is the repair shop originally installing an aftermarket axle which only lasted about 60,000 miles and not using a Volvo split ring when installing it. Even if they used the original it would have been better than this

Good news is the 'new' trans is actually coming from within Canada (well mostly, Quebec). So hopefully no border guard strike to hopefully worry about unless they decide to cut through the US as it is shorter to here that way! It has allegedly been put on a truck 2 days after supposedly being 'shipped'. Maybe mid-July for a delivery may be bettered?

Well hear was a surprise. I got a phone call this morning from a delivery driver saying he would be at my house within the next 2 hours with a transmission!! :o :?:

The EBay notification gave a delivery date of 25th June to 7th July 2024?? Not a problem, but lucky I was here.

Trans is now in the garage on a wheeled trolley. Now we just have to wait for my mechanic friend to return from vacation and then we can decide what other parts (other than the axle and gear oil) we should do. Axle seals, trans front seal, RMS and anything else? Do we need trans cooler seals and anything else?

The owner has ordered a used OE Volvo axle from Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island. I have never had a bad part from them over the years, but then they are not cheap. $275 CDN + 12% Tax + shipping. Ouch! A new OE axle starts at $1000 CDN + taxes.

Tomorrow my mechanic friend is coming over to help me swap the timing belt on my 2000 V70R. While he is here we will make up a list of parts we need to order to complete this job.

I nearly fell over when I looked that up. And that was from a Volvo dealer selling on line. If I had had to order from a local dealer you can add another 30% to that!! Even an aftermarket one is over $200 and many are $3-400+ CDN. A GKN axle is $650 CDN. Now if that is not a rip-off I don't know what is!! So the used OE one seems like almost a bargain! :x

As the saying goes, it is what it is.
