P80 dash mount repairs

I see this subject come up fairly regularly. I am currently working on repairing and reinforcing 2 lower dash sections with broken firewall bolt plastic mounts.

I will document what I do and then if anyone finds it useful then hopefully it helps.

I am not going to document the dash removal and refitting as that is definitely documented elsewhere. I am going to just show how I do these repairs and what I have learned to make it less daunting and more straight forward.

So watch this space as I will hopefully upload this over the next few days. I will include materials and some measurements of straps I make up for the reinforcing.

Apologies for the delay. Been a crazy couple of days with car and other issues. I have made up the brackets (2 sets + half a set for reminders if I have to do this again!). I have taken pictures as I went along so I will be adding those in. I am at the point of now gluing and screwing the brackets in finally and once dried that will be the first one complete. The 2nd one will much quicker I hope as the brackets are already made up so it is just a case of repairing the one broken mount and then adding the brackets.

We are planning to develop some glass fiber reinforced nylon brackets as part of a custom kit to help fix/strengthen those firewall brackets. Updates to come on our Facebook page @VPrints

Be careful when you do this. The repair has to be thin as the 4 mounts sit in a cupped section on the dash. The thin plates do minimal lifting on the dash mounts so don't affect how it sits. Unfortunately I don't have a car to take a picture of to show it. I am still hoping to get this completed this week and post the how to which may help you. It will be interesting to see for sure what you come up with.

Update:

Well today I glued and screwed the repair brackets on. The first dash is now just curing the JB Weld Plastic glue. Once that has cured over night I have one last job to do and that is to add some buffer tape to each of the mounts to stop them squeaking when bolted into the firewall seats.

I have taken photos as I have gone alone for the write up. Apologies for the delay but helping other Volvo owners has taken most of my time this week and last weekend. Now most of that is either dealt with or waiting on parts, I can now crack on with this as I want to give the XC70 a check over for a possible oil leak and it needs an oil change and general check over. I will also swap the summer tires on. That has been delayed as the water use limits means although the car washes (the recycle most of the water) are still allowed to run, when I washed the Toyota last week the water that came out was filthy. The car looked no better after the wash than before! I wanted the winter rims washed before I swapped them over, but with weather up to mid 20C's this week coming, we need to get the winters off.
