Possible Incorrect Rewiring of Fuel Injection Relay?

Post by Galaxion »

Image Hi, folks. My son's first car, 1997 850 Wagon. I noticed a relay dangling near the radiator. When I handled it, it basically just came apart in my hand. I replaced it, but the car seems to run rich now. Do you reckon I may have accidentally transposed those two red wires? Everything else seems fine. Thank you so much. He's anxious to learn to drive, and what a great first car! We're glad for any assistance.

Welcome Galaxion! I've got a 97 850 wagon too and have learned a ton here about repair / maintenance / etc.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

I would suggest you check the regular stuff for rich running like:

1) Plugs (gapped to 0.028") and mileage if you have any service info. Hopefully an 850 owner can confirm that the plugs should be changed every 30k miles?

2) Distributor cap/rotor/leads? - When were those last changed?

3) O2 sensors - How old are those, in particular the front/upstream one

4) ECT /Coolant temp sensor - If this is not working or broken (check the condition of the connector where it sits on the back of the power steering pump). There are test values for resistance checking v's ambient temperature. If this is not working the car will run rich or be challenging to start when cold.

5) Check fuel pressure is around 43 psi at the rail.

Good luck with the new car!

Neil.
