XC70 tranmission valve body replacement success

Just as the subject says, I wanted to report to this forum that I've successfully replaced the valve body in my 2005 XC70 with 115,000 miles.

The car was experiencing hard upshifts when the transmission was warm, hard or delayed garage shifts to park or reverse, and hunting for gears in low speed acceleration.

I used this guide to replace the valve body.

I had previously replaced just the solenoids in my old valve body. That was not adequate and didn't solve many problems.

I ordered the new valve body from World Wide Specialty Parts in Ocala, Florida. $479 for the valve body, with 1 year warranty, and an additional $100 for the refundable core. They shipped the new valve body in a box that had a prepaid FedEx label for returning the old valve body.

Beware the cheaper ($200) valve bodies on eBay. These are often just taken from parts cars and have not been rebuilt.

The process was fairly straightforward. I used four quarts of 3309 ATF and also replaced the coolant. My main deviation from the guide linked above was I removed the air hose over the valve body to do the removal/replacement from above.

After the work was complete, I reset the ATF fluid counter and transmission adaptations using VIDA. The resulting drive was like having a completely different car--very smooth. This is what I expected from this car when I originally bought it. Finally!

Thanks for the chuckle, that's what I thought when I replaced the valve body in my car, very nervous when trying it out for the first time, My wife was astonished the car even moved when I was done.

Kourt did a great job with the VB replacement and you also have to give credit to the company that remanufactured the valve body, there's a lot that can go wrong if all is not done correctly and thoroughly.

Nice accomplishment Kourt and I'm certain it's very satisfying having a nice shifting car afterwards.

Good job! I'm just curious how you got the valve body out the top? Did you have to drop the subframe in the front a bit? I didn't think there was room to get the oil pan off without dropping it. This would make the job so much easier!

Congrats! I am looking at the same problem, until now I was considering the Ebay ones which are all from China.

Did your transmission need a softwase ugrade afterwards?
