06 XC70 Power steering fluid type? Topic is solved

I just bought some Pentosin power steering fluid for our son's 06 XC70. I had read that is was CH202 type fluid. I have now done more research as Volvo gives 2 different fluid part numbers and types. Both listed for a 59 Vin# code.

I know Pentosin is normally a green color, but I have as yet not had a chance to open the CH202 to confirm if it is the CF11S or CH202 type fluid in the car.

As I understand it, they can possibly be mixed, but if the new stuff is red, then the fluid goes a muddy brown.

Anyone have any idea what is the correct version? I did read the handbook again, and found it stated CF11S which is the same stuff I use in the 00 V70R system (I found a half used bottle in my storage cupboard- Expiry date 2022).

I don't remember all the details but when I went down this rabbit hole for my P2 cars (06 and 07) I landed on CHF202. It's green and that's what I'm using in all three of them.

It is CHF 202 Neil, I did some extensive research a few years back. Not sure if you can mis it with the other pentosin though.

That is what I thought until I read the handbook which only mentions CF11S. It is also green.

There was a transition along the way, if I recall right my 02 and 05 take red ATF, 08s took green 202. I’d dip a paper towel into your power steering reservoir and verify what is in it.

Interesting. My 00 V70R uses Pentosin which I believe is green. I have half a bottle I bought back in 2017? or thereabouts. It is the same as one of the 2 listed for the XC70. I believe that is the CF11S version.

Our car had a power steering flush at 144,000km, and for Canada Volvo recommend the next flush was at 192,000km. Car is now at 197,000km. The flush at 144kkm does not list the fluid used, just a 'kit' with a part number I don't see anywhere. I will contact the dealer and figure that out.

Thanks for the guidance. I'm not stressed by this at all. I just hate having to guess stuff and not having clear info. Curse of being an engineer for too long!

At 190km worth doing the plugs. Can’t get much easier to do than on the Volvo 5 cylinder.
