For several years I look for a 2003-04 LS430 but gave up. They were either beat up or pristine and the pristine were pretty pricey. I finally gave up however after reading a few unintended acceleration problems so no longer on my bucket list of cars. The XC90 V8 on the other hand :D.

….
.
Basically my experience, too - same as yours. LS430s - of which a lot around here - have become too expensive for clean ones. I am a V8 fan. I still have a rare early 90s Audi V8 5-speed (non running). A project before long is to restore it back to glory.

This is even funnier, because besides a blue/tan GS430 being what I want, a P2 S60 awd is what I got for my step-son and he drives. I modded the suspension a bit - iPD inserts, converted engine brace to proper strut bar (aka, the “Bob Villa” mod). It handles really well and I really like driving it.

Those braces remind me of something relevant to P80 cars - there is a pretty cheap and very effective way to brace the front top/bottom.

1) Volvo offered an Ohlins strut brace as a factory accessory. A helpful dealer can still special order them and the prices are now lower than in the past. I got one for about $95 in 2021.

2) Volvo offered an “engine grating” for the under-body. When installed, it makes a VERY effective sub-frame brace and greatly stiffens up the front. They are aslo a special order item, but I got one for not much over $100 from Sweden. Smith Volvo in San Louis Obispo did the ordering for both, prices included shipping to my house in WA.

They come galvanized, I just painted them in Volvo colors for a kick. They really sharpen the handling on these cars and do not really compromise ride quality in any way. If someone wants to order these and see if still available, ask me as I’ll dig up the exact part numbers as on the grating, there is an error in the description. I know I have the details in some old emails w/Smith Volvo - who were exceptionally helpful.

Ohlins “factory” brace (I painted blue).

This is the factory engine grating. It is robust, and as you can see it bolts firmly on the front subframe cross-member. There are two slots in the rear cross-member it slides into; clearly made with this in mind. It is rigid enough it actually functions as an effective brace, too.

I guess we both like a good V8. My brother use to own a 98 LX470. He knew a tech guy who reprogrammed chips at $2K a pop. That thing purred and flew at all RPM for a large SUV. I think it was donated to his mechanic at the time and had 340K on the OE motor and trans. The other was the 07 Audi A8L. I drove it for two months while managing a home remodel. Would have love to consume some tarmac on the Autobahn with it. Was a tank but with great handling and power. Just down right hunkered down on the road. So refine yet sporty.

In Oct 2023 the 00 P80 was at 150K and was going towards Stage 0 with new rear springs, shocks and front sub-frame chassis brace. Still have new struts, new rotor and pads not installed.

viewtopic.php?p=635534&hilit=FCP+914009 ... ks#p635534

After new Goodyears, OBX strut brace earlier this year and less than 9K miles driven in 1.5 years, the car hit black ice. Totally took the wind out of the sails on the Project and probably now, never a P80 again. Those grates would have been great if they were to work the C70 chassis brace. Went to warm the engine the other day and it make my stomach turn as the thing fired right up and ran smooth :( . Took photos anticipating maybe testing the water in selling it.

Lol, this gets funnier. I used to have a 98 LC, same vehicle. Loved that truck. May still get another some day (or LX470).

I have not thought to try linseed oil on a car, but did play around with it on wood quite some time ago. Raw will take quite some time to dry. "Boiled" hasn't really been boiled for years and years. It uses heavy metal driers.

I'll have to see what I have on my shelves, and give it a try.

Only thing wrong with that repair is you used black and not silver duct tape!

I can see the rear cover is cracked at the back, but would not most of the dent on the rear fender not pop back out? A lot of it does not look like it has hard creases. The only area that will be an issue is the rear corner of the fender well. If you can find a rear cover, even without being in the correct color, and the mount on that side is likely broken. Is there something else I am missing?

It would not necessarily be pretty, but one of the cheap Amazon plastic staple welders would may a half decent job of stitching the rear bumper cover.

I do a lot of body work, and as Neil has said, most of that dent will just pop back out. I bet if you spent 1/2 - 1 hour on it, you'd be at 85%+.

Thanks for the encouragement gentleman. I need to replace at least one bent camber arm and maybe the passenger side also. The front camber is slightly off besides needing two rims. The body panel where the clip attaches is pretty mangled. I know all that could be made to look good but not close to OE frame dimensions.

Parents garage has the 2007 S60 2.5T that needs a turbo and next to it in the driveway is the 05 GS430 with intake off. The reason for the black tape is because it's the thicker and stickier Gorilla Tape. No silver in the parts bin for now. Parents community doesn't allow for 2 cars in the driveway let alone working on it outside but the HOA has not sent a letter yet. The black taped is kind of hidden by the bush when backed in (Previous Post Photo). Recent health issues will have me home bound and not enough strength to get out for maybe an hour or so a day. It's a day to day battle. The photos open in my computer in the correct orientation but doesn't post correctly for some reason.

Time for an update, but there really isn't anything to report as the 850 just does what 850s are designed to do

After the Inverness show I attended a local show in Milngavie town centre, and look forward to going back next year

Next was Bo'Ness, in hindsight I shouldn't have been there as it was mostly souped up cars with owners that liked to rev the guts out of their cars just for the sake of it

Errol in Perthshire was another great show with lots of variety and I would like to go back again next year. Shame I wasn't able to take a decent picture without my fat fingers getting into view

Another local show in Paisley town centre which I'll give a miss in the future

Moffat was next and again a huge show with cars travelling from south of the border so plenty of variety

Today was a 200 mile round trip to Glamis Castle, this show never fails to impress and has to be up there as one of the best north of Hadrians Wall. Bonus was four 850s together

P80GLT,
You have such a nice, well kept Volvo. I am sure it is appreciated at all the shows.

Wow you have been a busy guy with all the shows. Nice to see so many shows north of the border. I still think they were all photoshopped though. Where is the rain?? :D

MoVolvo's, sorry to hear of the health issues. I sincerely hope your health improves quickly. Didn't notice the chunks out the wheel though. The section behind the bumper for the mount is not too terrible. A bit of hammering will get that straight enough to fit a replacement bumper mount and then the damage is hidden.

Also, didn't realize the underside had challenges too. That is a lot of work.

Neil.

Today was a great day. I removed the subframe from my V70 and finally testfit the electric motor with the 3D printed prototypes of the mounting and adapter plates:

Hopefully I'll be buzzing around the streets soon :)
(More info on OpenInverter: click)

I will publish the measurements of the B5252FS on MVS soon, it might be interesting for people doing engine swaps (but why would you want to remove a Volvo engine anyways? :D ). I was not able to find any dimensions of the bellhousing bolt pattern etc.
Check out my 3D Printed Parts for Volvo P2 and P80 on Printables :D
