Re: For MVS People who love animals…..
How very timely that I came across this thread 2 weeks ago and thank you for posting the Pet Assessment on page one. Our very special Gus was diagnosed with bone cancer two weeks prior, the vet described the tumour as large and aggressive and located where the pelvis meets the spine. Gus had been having trouble with his right rear leg and we couldn't find any injury so it was revealed with a CT scan. The vet gave him a week to 1 month......he lasted 3 weeks before we called the vet last week to come to our house and we said goodbye. He was a 9 1/2 year old puppy.
We've had a lot of labs but this one was extra special, kind and considerate are not usually traits that I would attribute to a Labrador retriever but Gus was certainly that. He came to us 9 years ago after failing out of the drug sniffing dog program in a prison in Northern Alberta, too hyper as a puppy he couldn't concentrate on the training and failed out of his first trial. We got him at a discount because he was 4 1/2 months old. He fit in with our pack right from day one, almost as though he knew he was always meant to be with us. Benny, our two year old Lab Pyrenees was a stern Alpha with him right from the start, letting him know who ran the household and how things were going to be, often growling at him and barking him into a corner with teeth bared, Gus just wanted to play and be friends, his playful advances being shunned and shut down. We were afraid that this relationship was not going to work, that we would have to rehome Gus or return him to the breeder. We didn't realize that Benny was "training" him as his own, Just as he had been trained by our previous black lab Brady. After 8 days Gus' playful advances were accepted and the two formed one of the closest bonds I've ever seen with canines.
A constant companion and always grabbing shotgun in the car, Gus ensured that he didn't miss out on being part of anything that was going on in our lives. If I was working in the garage he would be out there too. He would always sit where he could maintain eye contact with me. He never did anything that would make you say "bad dog!" ever. Unlike Benny who is selfish and carefree, Gus would feel terrible whenever Benny would steal food off the kitchen counter or rip open a garbage bag for fear that he may be wrongfully assumed the culprit, he felt bad even when the other dogs found themselves in trouble!
Goodbye my dear friend, champion of the dog park, swimmer of icy cold lakes and rivers, eater of McDonalds fries in the car, coyote slayer. You left us too soon but with good memories that will last our lifetime!
