AC Problem

Post by sugturbo »

Hi all

I have got problems with the AC on the 850 with all the common symptoms.
AC works in the morning perfect but goes down after 35 km, same spot everyday, I have to shut it off and on after 5 mins.
Now it stopped working at all. The workshop checked the gas and it is full.
The blower is always on full, even when the slider is on zero.
The compressor does not come on at all and no lights next to the AC switch.
The fuse is OK.

Any ideas
Regards
Rick

Welcome to MVS.
There is a good possibility that the clutch gap on the compressor has grown to large and when it heats up there's even more of a gap- the reason it cuts out after working in the morning. There is a write-up in our repair database on how to shim the clutch yourself to make the compressor operational again. If there is enough gas (around 35psi when compressor is on) and all other parts of the A/C check out, then it's either your compressor, the clutch (as noted above) or the compressor switch. The switch (also called the low pressure switch) is the linked connector next to the firewall under the hood. First step would be to pull it apart and use a piece of wire (paper clip works well) to jumper the switch to see if the compressor comes on that way. If it does, then clean that connector. If it doesn't then you're in for a replacement of the switch or possibly the wiring at the compressor, the compressor itself, or you'll need to modify the clutch gap. Do the cheaper/easier things first to track down the problem.

Is this a manual climate unit or an electronic?

The way to tell is if it has AUT on the fan control and the mode control. If the fan speed control is 0 to 4 and there are no degree indications on the temperature settings then it is manual.

Hi all and thanks for great forum.

I have the AUT on my panel but the blower goes on full speed as soon I turn on the ignition.

Before it all went down the compressor was cycling.
Checked the gas again and it is full.
Tried to bridge the switch but no sign of life.
Could it be the control panel which is gone ?

Thanks again

Could be.
I'm hoping Lee jumps in here- he knows much more about these than I do.
