So ugly, but cute at the same time! They have become so expensive now. There was one for sale on the Canada West coast about 6 months ago and it was well north of $20000 CDN. There was also a VW Munga basket case.

V nice. Overdrive! I love red seats in a dark exterior. Big rust hole at the front door hinge post.

It'll be out of my range quickly.

I really like these 122 wagons, and this one would be a fine one to own. Not perfect, but that's actually attractive to me, because I enjoy refurbishing things.
Until I looked at this one, I never realized the styling clues Volvo adapted when they designed the P2 cars. It's mainly the "hip" and the V shaped lines on the bonnet.

One of the things I remember when I first saw the P2 V70 at the Ravenna Volvo showroom (Seattle) in 2000 was the hips. I thought "very nice, without being overdone." If I recall, it had the optional picnic table attached, tail door up. It was a dream car.

When the P2 V70 came out, I very much disliked it. And I think it was simply for the reason that it was such a departure from the P80 design. I thought, this is soo different.
Well, my opinion has completely changed over the years and I think they are the most beautiful wagons out there now.

I agree - it has "tumblehome" like a stylish boat, it has hips, it sits down well over it's wheels, it's slippery, it has good proportions. The other day I was sitting in a restaurant window with my wife, and we glanced across the sea of generic suvs, crossovers, and trucks in the parking, and there was this nice (smallish now) black wagon with the vertical rear window. It just stood out as a nice design.

The 850 wagon was a taut, tight design with really no straight lines or flat surfaces anywhere, in spite of how it looks from a distance. A pretty aero shape. We called ours the Red Sled - low and fast.

The same guy, Jan Wilsgaard, designed both the 122 and the 850. That is something when you think about it, 40 years apart.
I think Brit Peter Horbury designed the P2.

Funny, Matt, I also went to Ravenna Volvo showroom, in 1994, for an unveiling of the 850 wagon. The new hotrod T5 turbo with the cool wheels, nice colors, nice interior. I sat in one and thought, Well, I'll never be able to afford one of these!"

Ha! Crazy coincidence. I'd rather have been at the one you were at, but I didn't get into Volvos until 2000. I once asked my friend who was a valet at the Brown Palace hotel (Denver) circa 1996 what his favorite car was (that he drove and parked). He said 850 Turbos.
