I have met the owner of that red 850R. I don't think that is his 500 bhp R but I must ask him. It is really a thin of beauty. He spent a lot of time rescuing 850R's over several years. He knows these cars inside out.

The $5500 bid is low, and it was originally a US car and as it is over the 25 year rule should be fairly easy to re-import?

'64 PV, Dealer listing - which I normally tend to ignore, but this seems to be a genuine estate sale.

Car sits nice. LS needs dressed up a bit.

Slow flipper, made (some) running repairs, previous owner/builder made the questionable decision to remove the rear swaybar.

And why "surface-piercing" props? Is that more efficient? Although I think hydroplane props are like that, just the bottom part in the water.
Gar Wood - who made his fortune in the trash hauling business - had Christopher Columbus Smith build the first modern hydroplane during this same era, with the double sponson and the air compression gap to lift the hull, decreasing hull wetted area resulting in more speed than a simple planing hull with the same horsepower. A fluid dynamics engineer could better address the prop issue, it's not inherently more efficient, just a product of the hull design. Plus, Rooster Tail !
Lake Washington, Seattle. I-90 floating bridge in the background. This is where the annual hydro races are held each year. The Gold Cup. The event where the Boeing test pilot did a barrel roll in the 707 prototype in 1958.

Wooden hydros! Growling Merlins! Rooster tails! Mount Rainier in the mist!

There used to be the Miss Budweiser, Miss Bardahl (Seattle-made oil), Miss Notre Dame, Miss Slo-Mo-Shun, Miss Wahoo, Miss ROCK! (KISW FM), Miss Oh Boy Alberto (sausage) and many others. Before they switched to helicopter turbines, we could hear these from our house, almost 10 miles away over hills.

Looks like they were direct drive - push them off the dock, start them, and they're going! You have to throttle back to make the corners.

In the summer of 1979, unlimited hydroplane boats raced near El Dorado, Kansas. I was there with two college buddies. If I remember correctly (and some things were lost in a haze of beer), Miss Budweiser was one of the boats. About every other run they would stall and die. But if they fired properly and ran, they were great crowd pleasers.

During my junior year in high school, on June 19th, 1966, I was aboard a course safety boat in the Potomac River in DC for The President's Cup Regatta.
