2001 140 V70 SE - Electrical Problems?

Post by Mickey »

Hi,

I just bought the above and all was fine for a few days. However just as I was approaching our driveway there was a loss of power so I stopped and turned the engine off - no warning lights had come on. When I tried to restart all the warning lights come on for a few minutes, then just the engine warning on it's own and there is a clicking sound coming from the right hand side of the steering wheel (Right Hand Drive). Other than the aforementioned, nothing happens when I turn the key. During this time all the interior lights are on, though dimmed

Any ideas?

Actually, could this just be a dead battery?

Thanks in advance...

Welcome to MVS.
It is very strange that the battery would die AFTER driving it but it could be that the alternator is not charging your battery. See if jump starting your car will get it going...if it does you know it's the batter/alternator. If not, then it's something else. Jumping the car is done from under the hood- not in the rear where the battery is. Your owner's manual shows you how. AutoZone (and other) auto parts store has a special kit that they will use to help diagnose your battery and charging kit if you could get it down to them.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

I agree

I tried a push start just there, but everything is completely dead and even a run down the hill made no difference - however, maybe if the battery is completely dead the car wouldn't start that way anyway due to the sophisticated electronics?

Is it possible the battery has just died? The car was sitting idle for 3 months before I purchased it

I'll have access to a new battery in the morning, so that, along with some other checks will hopefully reveal something more and, maybe even a positive outcome

Thanks for taking the time to reply

UPDATE:

Stuck a new battery in this morning and all was fine. However a quick check showed that the alternator is the culprit, so needs replacing - ah well!
Cheers
