My neighbour just bought a Rivian SUV and took me for a spin in it last week. It's a beautiful amazing vehicle that has more acceleration than I've ever felt in a vehicle in my life, even weighing in at 7000 lbs. It's easily the fastest vehicle I've ever been a passenger in.....by far. I told him I'd race him to Vancouver in my Volvo and I wouldn't exceed the speed limit, a race I'd easily win by several hours. For the same reason, this neighbour who is an avid skier cannot take his $120,000 Rivian to Lake Louise for a day of skiing in the winter. My other big problem with these vehicles is build quality of the body and componentry, Tesla and Rivian and the like have only been making cars for about 10-15 years whereas the other car manufacturers have been doing it for decades and more than a century. How good are the ball joints, door hinges, body panels, brake components, etc on a vehicle where the engineering is so young on?

Today I re-soldered for the 3rd or 4th time my bi-fuel stepper motor. This time, I will wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent some of the engine heat from reaching it.

Unfortunately the more time passes the more repairs are piling up.

1. CCM has started to fail.
2. HU-650 has not worked properly for the past year.
3. Blinker stalk does not work properly when using the left turn signal.
4. Cabin blower motor needs replacing.
5. 4 shocks to replace.
6. AW55 transmission isn't in nice working order.
7. Power window guides need replacing as the windows come back down when I push the automatic close function(recalibration has not worked).
8. Various oil leaks from cam cover and steering rack.
9. A slow leak has resulted in a low amount of AC refrigerant over the past 2 years.
10. Plugged cat or rear O2 sensor needs replacing.
11. Brake position sensor on the brake booster needs replacing as I have intermittent codes and non-working cruise control half of the time.

I can easily sink $1000 dollars right now minus the transmission and may not still get it in stable working order.

Changed oil and ATF Sat. I went biking in the morning while it was cool and nice and then of course a thunderstorm blew in right as I jacked up the car and drenched me!

Drain and fill ATF. It was very dark red, I’ve changed it twice before. Interesting how exactly 3 1/2 quarts drain out each time.

Then I noticed the odometer and temperature windows on the cluster were missing a lot of “sticks,” barely legible. This is a rebuilt cluster from Xmodex in CAN so if it’s going I’ll be very disappointed.

If it makes you feel any better the Zemodex warranty is almost unlimited no questions asked. I sent my DIM back after 7 years and they fixed it up quick, I was able to talk them into sending me a prepaid shipping label also.

Well that's encouraging. Those windows have always been so dim (since the replacement) you really can't see them in daylight.

Sounds like a faulty repair. Disappointing.

The 02 XC70 I am about to start work on has the gear position light out on the dash. Does this require a DIM repair or are there bulbs behind there that can be replaced?

Thanks,

Neil.

I also had my ETM replaced from Xemodex after a couple years. No charge. And a couple tech calls to troubleshoot. No problems for about 5 years since.

07 Xc70

Did a compression test yesterday, to decide whether I should keep on repairing this car or just let it wear into the ground. No oil in the cylinders, let it turn over 7 times for each.

Seems consistent enough. So I guess I’ll keep working on it 😃. New coil harness now on the way from Dave Barton and new coils (originals with 175k miles on them, connectors are broken on 2/5 ). May re-do the test wet when I have it back apart.

Not terrible at all. Might do the same on the 02 with 235k miles I am working on a donor car for a friends student son. Found some interesting issues so far, but none terrible.

Good Luck!

Neil.
