The starter can get hung up on the dowel pin. If you can't just work it back and forward to break it loose, you may have to try a pry bar or a flat blade screw driver gently hammered between the flange and the starter near the dowel.

Neil.
Thanks scot850, I sprayed a little penetrating oil on the pin last night, and this morning I was able to gently tap a putty knife in between the flange and the starter. Eventually managed to pull it out.

There was no bracket on the back of the starter. I can't see one on the starter of my 2001 V70 either. My 98 S70 has been gone so long, I can't remember...

I didn't think they had them on the P2 but been a while since I pulled a couple of spares for our son's car for the 'just in case pile!'

The bracket most didn't re-use and I think the later P80 cars and P2 have smaller physically starters, so the bracket is overkill.

Good luck! You could try jumper cables to the starter and see if it runs. It may not be totally broke and may just be the solenoid that is bad.

Pulled the starter out and did a bench test
12V Battery Positive terminal - to- Starter terminal
12V Battery Negative terminal - to- Starter housing

12V lead from Starter terminal - to - the signal post

Basically like this:

Nothing happens. It looks a little rusty inside, so thinking it got wet, and when I let it sit for two days, it seized up. I can rotate the gear manually. It's quite stiff.

I'll swap it out and post the results.

If you go to junk yard, then starter motor design changed after 2006, so 2007+ starter has different number of teeth and connector.

Not sure why Volvo did this change bc it is the same engine anyway...

If it is the starter, maybe it was on borrowed time and just happened to quit.

I took a closer look on my 2001 V70 and there was a bracket on the back end. Maybe on the 05 it was lost at some point.

So I replaced the starter and it started right up. :)
Thanks for all of your help!

Remnants of the broken splash shield were still holding on. I replaced that too.
