Intermittent non start issue, ign switch or cem?

A little background: Geoff Petersen is the cars name (after Craig Ferguson s robot sidekick, my wife is silly). Its our second V70, 2005. We got it a couple years ago and it's developed a sporadic condition where you go to start it and either nothing at all happens or it will turn over without starting or turn over for a couple seconds and stop. If you wait a few minutes and try again sometimes it will start right up, or if I turn the key to pos 2 and wait at least 30 secs before cranking it usually starts. It hasn't left us stranded, even though it can sometimes take many tries to get it to start. Immobilizer? Ignition switch? CEM?
It goes months without issue, then randomly this problem pops up again.
I changed the voltage regulator last weekend because it was overcharging and the CEM was acting up yesterday ( turned on the emergency flashers by itself and they wouldn't go off til I disconnected the battery and reset it) it's been fine since.

with immobilizer you'd get nothing when turning the key and it will present a message, "start prevented."

it might be a balky PEM but before throwing parts it would be better to get a decent scanner that can read the fuel pressure.
even a cheap one should help.

had the same thing happen today when i came out of the store, turned the key and nothing.
I thought I might reset the elec system and removed the battery cover, neg terminal was not clamping down, the bolt on the clamp was tight but the clamp was still loose.
I loosened the clamp, pried it open a bit and pushed it further down on the post (tapered), everything came back to life.
Check the basics.

I went ahead and replaced the ignition switch and it started on the first try. But then a few hours later went out and nothing. Then a few hours later, first try. Could this be a heat related condition?

it would be easier to diagnose if you do tests when it fails to crank.
does it set any codes ?

It died on my wife today while driving. After waiting a while it started back up and was able to drive home. I just have a basic OBD2 scanner but it's showing p0192, p0089 and p0014. When I was running the scan it wouldn't start at first and then after I'd let it it sit with the key in pos 2 for a while it started right up. 0192 and 0089 are fuel pressure related and 0014 is exhaust cam timing. Anyway, it's got an appointment at the dealer on Saturday. This is above my pay grade

Well, the dealership said they don't work on pre '07 cars. Really? Could have mentioned that when the appointment was made 2 days ago. Then we could have got it on the schedule at the indie shop that's closed on the weekend.

I would send that report to Volvo National HQ. Then take it to the Indy

Indie shop can't get it in for two weeks, sooo. In the meantime I've got 4 days off this weekend. Guess I could pull the circuit boards, inspect, clean contacts, etc. couldn't hurt.
