Like you say, it in theory can only be one of 2 things. On this car you can NEVER assume something is obvious. In theory the only 2 things that move that were touched were the new hub bearing and the axle. It will sit in disgrace until I can be bothered to look at it again (maybe never!!)

Finally got a very small amount of enthusiasm to have another look. Car up on hoist, wheels off the ground. Got my son to start the car and run the car in gear. No noises at all. Nothing.

Put the car back on the ground and got my son to drive the car so I could sit in the passenger seat and listen. Initially nothing. No noises turning left or right, or driving straight. Then a faint occasional rubbing noise that then became a rotational knocking noise.

Seems not there much when you have a load on, but when you coast and slow (no brakes) the knocking starts. Seems to be on the RHF area. I never worked on or touched that side at all??

Put the car away, and it can sit until I decide what to do next. If my mechanic buddy is too busy, I will arrange to drive it carefully to Volvo and let them look at it.

Cv joint. Lifting it is changing the orientation of The CV enough to change the noise.

That , or the Devil is making a stop in Calgary again.

I am going with the latter, as this car is cursed!

I am planning to work up any enthusiasm to work on the car. I was planning to leave replacing the wheel bearing until the winter lay up, but might as well do it now and I can check the axle and the bearing once removed. I have a spare R RHF axle I can throw in (or at it!!) while I am in there.

Finally decided to go have yet another look at this endless PITA-R.

Got it up on the hoist yet again, stripped the hub off. I still noticed a slight movement in the bearing but no noise at all.

Bearing bolts surprisingly again came loose without too much of a fight. The bearing hub took a little more persuasion! Again, the bearing off the car does not feel bad but as I have a new one it will get fitted as I planned to do that over the winter anyway.

Got down my spare R RHS axle for comparison to see if the CV's felt bad. Again, both axles feel the same and good. What I did find is the carrier bearing has been doing it's work as a bearing too long! It feels loose compared to the 'spare' axle. I won't have time to work on it tomorrow, but on Thursday I'll take it to the dealer and ask them to give a second opinion on both axles and if all good on the spare, I'll fit that for now. I'll then leave them the original axle if they agree the axle is good, and have them install the spare new OE carrier bearing for me and I'll them keep that on the shelf.

With a bit of luck I might get this back on the ground by the end of the weekend. Will it then be fixed? Who knows??

Oh, and I'll swap the inner tie-rod as it is getting loose while it is apart.

What has failed on the PITA-R today?

It is the car that keeps taking. I'm sure part of it is our fault due to it's lack of use. Lack of use because it always breaks, so broken, lack of use. Is the circle of car life??

I've been away today, so not aware of anything else having broken (yet!). Tomorrow I plan to tackle the axle checks, and if all is good on at least one axle, I hope to start the re-assembly process.
