Fan questions
I'm trying to flush out a problem with my 2013 S60. Changed the thermostat due to dash message of high heat. I realize that the cooling fan may not be running. It will turn on when you turn on the A/C, but I haven't heard it run after a drive. What triggers/ sends it info to spin? How does a DIY'er check that it is getting the information to turn on? Is there a sending unit or module that controls it? I would hate to bring this to Volvo if it's a 'simple' fix.

The fan ballasts fail on these. You either get random fan running, no running or running all the time. Try a junkyard one as they are expensive! Not sure if yours is a duel or single fan.

I'm going to assume yo have a FWD S60 T5 as the 3.0 Turbo has a twin fan unit.
For some reason I can't find it easily for your car. Volvo shows it on their parts drawing but not a a part. Seems everyone want you to but the whole fan unit and module. Only one I could find on a quick search was this one:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... n-87434101
It may be that the fans themselves fail too, so perhaps everyone has decided it is better to replace both. Just check if you go that route the module/controller/whatever people call it these days is included.
The controller is also usually works along with the coolant temp sensor. If that is not working correctly then the module is not getting a signal to start. I don't think it is the likely cause though.
