2004 Volvo V70 Rear Dust Shield

Post by mnmk »

Rear dust/splash shields are rattling.
Can these dust/splash shields be taken off and not replaced?
Do I need them?
Thanks!!

Can you post a picture as I can't think of what you are talking about to advise you on if they are delete-able?

Thanks for the reply. I attached a photo for you. It is the thin metal shield behind the rear rotor. It is held on by four small bolts. It just seems unnecessary, but I just want to make sure before I do anything.
Thank you very much!

Can it be removed without removing the hub?

yes you need them, the Ebrake shoe retainer slots are on the shield.
make sure the dust shield isn't rubbing the brake drum, if the bolt holes are rounded out add fender washers.
your shield is in good shape compared to mine.

The guys have already answered the question that they are needed. However, while you have it in bits, check the aluminum foot for for the parking brake shoes. In salty areas or where salt is used on the roads, that aluminum peg can become severely corroded interacting with the steel of the brake shoes and the metal backing plate. In worst case they can literally disintegrate causing the shoes to detach and wreck the read hub. If there is any doubt there are steel replacements available from the likes of Skandix and Ebay.

Any thoughts on my question regarding leaving the hub in place while replacing this dust shield?

I don't believe you can. From your picture, it looks like the 4 bolts holding the hub in place will prevent you doing that. Is the picture of your back plates/dust shields? If so, they don't look rusted, so why are they rattling? Are you sure it is them?
