After my roof screwed up and unsynced itself 2 years ago, I have been opening and closing it manually. However the last time I got the cover fully open no problem with the allenkey, when I went to lower the cover with the allenkey, the key mechanism had pushed in and no matter how many turns of the key, that mechanism was not engaging.
In order to close the cover, I removed both rams and the airstruts that are part of the rams.
Has anyone experienced this sort of mechanical failure with the hexkey mechanism? I could find another or maybe it could be rebuilt, but I find the whole thing problematic.
What I would like is to simplify, so that I can open and close the roof by hand.
I haven't looked at it since. I have questions.
If the cover is not connected to the struts, can it fall all the way back or off onto the trunk and ruin the paint?
I remember seeing a video where this Aussie man casually was storing groceries in the roof cavity, but can't find it.
I was thinking that maybe some sort of prop rod could be attached to the cover to keep it from falling shut while muscling up the top. Has anyone looked into any solutions like that?
I find when lifting the top, there is a lot of weight or resistance. Is there any way to make the lifting of the top easier mechanically? Or could the motors be rigged to do the difficult part only?

Great idea if the convertible top could be "rigged" to be manual up and down by hand, without the ridiculous hex-key system in trunk that Volvo provides. Also seems like the hex-key manual system has several areas that can strip including the hex itself and the cables that are easily over tweaked. I have similar issue and no longer put the top down. Convertible is great when everything is working. dealer is the only way to adjust micro-switches that control the automatic up / down function. There are 2 kinds of convertibles a.) ones that dont work properly and b.) ones that eventually wont work properly.
