Hey there
Just thought I would post this little tid bit since a quick search never resulted in any real hits.
My 2002 s60 winter beater has been parked for most of the summer and yesterday I decided too give it a test fire up to make sure all is well for winter service.
It started fine and idled down so with that I was satisfied and decided to hold it at 2500-3000 rip m's to clear out any condensation I may have created in the exhaust or elsewhere. After a couple of seconds a fairly noticeable plume of Kirklands finest smoke rose from the engine compartment. I found it odd as this car has no history of engine leaks, power steering is another story though.
Armed with lighting equipment, a fresh splash of oil was now decorating the concrete floor near the back of the engine. Further inspection revealed it had also splashed onto the right hand driveshaft next to the trans and a few dribbles on the side of the block just above the oil pan.
Even closer inspection revealed this particular B5244s was indeed machined for turbo oil drain. Understandable that Volvo maybe shared blocks with light pressure turbo version of 2.4?
Problem being the hole was open to the elements and would only leak oil under heavy acceleration i guess but this is the first time I noticed being in the confines of the garage.
My question is what's supposed to be in that hole? And why did it go?
PCV is still healthy and pulling a vacuum. Checked my other B5244s and it's not machined for the drain.
Funny that nobody else reported a similar problem.
Going to go see what Volvo website says should go in there.
Any incites?
cheers

if you don't have a turbo, you didn't say, then it probably needs a plug.
see if you can feel any threads in the hole.
worst case ,put a tapered threaded steel plug in it with sealant.

No turbo. Regular atmospheric pressure on this engine.
Using my finger to feel around and my handy mirror on a stick I do not feel or see any threads.
I tried to get my caliper up in there to measure and comes up around - .790"
I also thought about adding threads but don't like my chances of getting aluminum swarf down into the pan and messing up my engine.
Although not a real elegant repair, a taper wooden dowl is in there now and should keep out the elements and allows the PCV to function as designed.
Truly I was just curious why this wasn't more of a problem or more documented issue?

My guess is a plug fell out.I would think S engines are cast with the drain snout but it wouldn’t be drilled. I’ll check mine

you can also try an expanding plug like these.deano1 wrote: ↑25 Oct 2024, 01:34 No turbo. Regular atmospheric pressure on this engine.
