Definitely worth going down the fix in a bottle route. It is junk anyway if it gets removed, so worth a shot.

Did last night drive around and stand heating my transmission to trigger gear change Adaptation manually. Got the arrow blink to notify about it successfully. Hopefully while sitting at bus stop which had house near didnt get too uncomfy random Volvo sitting there at middle of night as they left house 10 minutes after i stopped.

Well I fixed the heater fan that wasn't running on 4th speed. Turns out it was a relay and not the resistor, shoulda looked at a wiring diagram before replacing the resistor... Well a cheap general switching relay fit the original relay exactly so I happened to have one of those at home and now the fan works on all speeds.
Since my car came without service books or any service history I decided to get my own service book. It's just a spiralbound notebook. It's pretty cheap to custom print these. I got a table for oil changes on the inside back cover.

And while I am at it I got some pens made up too

Also fitted a filter holder and active charcoal filter

Then I gave it a good wash and wax, just wax-shampoo. I'd have liked to use turtles ceramic hybrid spray but then I have to dry the car first and nothing dries this time of year.

Stepped into the car and heard a splash. Driver's side front and rear footwells were both standing water. It's been sitting for about a week, and in that time we've had a couple of typhoons. No sunroof so I suspect the rear corner of the driver's door gasket which has let in a few drops before.
Pulling out the driver's carpet was wasier than I thought it would be, but had to settle for lifitng the underlay off the bottom.
For the rear I found myself quite confused. Pulled up the carpet halfway and found that the hard fiber material underneath was not only soggy but seemed to have a good amount of motor oil? Old spill from the previous owner perhaps?
It is now in two parts unfortunately, it ripped at the waterline despite my best efforts. Is the material supposed to be stiff or is that an effect of age? I also discovered a drain hole plug that I'm now tempted to just leave uncapped.
Any other common leaks I should check? Didn't find anything else wet but it has sat for a bit.

Check the large cowl drains as well as the smaller drains around the fuse box. They are hard to see, but they commonly clog up and cause water entry to the driver footwell. You'll need to remove the cowl under the windshied wipers to get to them.RedBrickCollector wrote: ↑08 Nov 2024, 11:13 Stepped into the car and heard a splash. The carpet dry rot in hot places. I got my brother to ship a set for an 850 for me that he pulled from a local junkyard. Cost a fortune to ship from the US to Canada, and when they arrived I saw straight away they looked clean (from California) but the material literally fell apart. I ended up looking and finding one locally and it cleaned up well and was not rotten.

Checked the suggested area, and unclogged the drain under the fuse box. Seems to be fine but when it's a little drier I think I'll put a dab of liquid gasket on the fuse box holes, since it seems that's where the water gets in. Maybe grease instead, I'll see.
What I did mainly though was address the missing bolts on the rear trans/engine support bracket. Tried loosening the front mount and then putting a piece of wood so I could jack the right side using the big flat area where the trans and engine meet. It got the holes to align more or less but very frustratingly I couldn't get the bolt to start threading. Cue several hours of going back and forth, adjusting the jack a little, checking the hole with a stick, and trying to thread a bolt in.
To add to this, I'm 98% sure the old bolt has broken off inside the transmission for the upper hole. Considering that the car has been running with just one bolt for who knows how long, I'm thinking two out of three bolts should be fine until the engine needs to come out of the car, because I can't think of any way to extract it in place

Hello Dennis, I see your 850 is coming along nicely! Love that color.
I am curious about the brackets for your aux. high beams. Long time ago I think Volvo had something available, but I was thinking of maybe fabricating something. Would you be able to share some details of how you mounted them?
This is such a Scandinavian thing. I have been to Sweden and Finland quite a few times in my earlier years, and those auxiliary lights were such a common sight on the roads. I guess it's still a popular upgrade.
