I have a 1985 240dl, for almost 2 months I have been hearing an squealing sound, not a belt squealing sound. At first I thought the sound was near my alternator, but now it sounds as though it is coming from the water pump, fan belt area. It seems to be that my next step is to take the belt off the water pump and run it.
I have attached a video, if anyone has any input that would be great.

It could be the timing belt idler pulley.
Take off all the V belts to test this theory.

Thanks, I will do that this weekend. This morning, we brought our engine stethoscope and spray bottle out to check it. We sprayed water on the belts and that seemed to help, when we sprayed the belt lubricant spray on the sound became worse. With the stethoscope we noticed that the alternator sounded rough when just placed on the alternator but when we pressed down on the stethoscope the sound revved up. I would have attached a video or two, but I am having issues with being able to add a video to this thread something about, "Error parsing server response".
Tomorow we will do the take the belt off the water pump and alternator and run for a sec, would you advise checking when the engine is cold, warm or does it matter.

Cold maybe...you don't want it hot with no water pump running.
I've sprayed belt dressing on belts in the past and made it WORSE. And old glazed belt might squeak some, see how old they look.

If you take off the belts and they look bad, this would be a great time to replace the belts.
As I recall, removing the fan blade is a big help in changing the belts.

Thank you all! I took the belts off this Saturday and tested it without the alternator belt/ water pump belt in play. There was no noise and the belt does need to be replaced. Thinking that it is the bearings in the alternator pulley, there is no play but a does have a grinding noise when hand spinning it. I figure the alternator and belts should be replaced, the alternator is a Bosch and looks it age. I have not pulled it out yet, but have been looking at alternators to replace it with. Any suggestions?
