Yesterday I tried to hunt down the source of a leak into my rear tailgate. I think water is getting in through the hinge and dripping down from the D pillar. It seems the seal that presses up against the body of the car is not up to the task anymore or being interfered with by the shrunken rubber seal that runs along the top of the door. It has shrunk back from the corner it is supposed to sit in.
Car also has a dent in that corner of the roof from a branch that fell, supposedly while the previous owner had it for sale. I don' think this damage would lead to a leak. Also potentially the screw for the roof rail is leaking, but it started getting too cold to feel my hands.
The water appears on the rubber trunk mat underneath the D pillar speaker. I'm afraid to take any plastic trim off the car with the temperature hovering around freezing.

Edit: a picture is worth 1000 words

If they are in good condition I'd be happy to buy them as the ones I have dont seems to sealing very well along the top.
scot850 wrote: 13 Dec 2024, 14:28 I've had the roof trim/rail mounting screws leak in the past. The Volvo part is a small piece of one side sticky tar-like tape that 'heals' when the screw goes through it. Over time the material dries out and leaks. Some silicon should fix that or panel bond.

If that corner seal is stuck down fully, water should not get around it. It may have got loose when the branch hit it?

Have you checked the tail light seals are in fact sealing?

Good luck!
These seals are strange because they just sit loose in the corner, not secured. I don't think the branch loosened anything because it is the same on both sides. I don't think the leak is coming from the tail light because of where it is leaking from, I actually caught a drip peeking out from the plastic trim above the side glass in the trunk area on that side, maybe pointing towards a leaking roof rack screw. I'd try some teflon tape before anything more permanent

If the tree hit or bent the roof trim, it may have been enough to break the seal on the mounting screw for the trim clip to the roof.

Cleared it off snow today, it doesn't get a covered spot because it has the cabin heater. Car without gets that.

Wow, you got a bit of snow! We have only had one dump like that so far this winter (thankfully!). Still love that color!

The worst part about snow is the other drivers. We had a few inches this morning and the plow trucks were a little late, but people were still driving like they were late to work.

Felt the back end on the v70xc slide out a little bit at some stop signs, but I'm driving on pretty high treadwear rated all seasons. Same corners I have had some pretty clenchworthy slides in the 94 (<90° angle left turn).

Might do the torque wrench test of the AWD system just because I'm curious. I let my friend drive once and he was pretty violent about the F and R shifting during parallel parking until the car clunked, but I had taken the car through some mud before and felt the back wheels pushing me along.

Most people here have no problem dealing with the snow. Studded tires came on in november for most people (it's the law), some people might use friction tires but I only ever trusted studded tires.

Where I have most problems is my own driveway! Because I have to plow that myself

If only we were allowed studded tires! Having said that, most of the winter the roads eventually clear and highways seem to manage to clear quicker than the city.

Agreed, snow is not the issue, it is other drivers who don't get physics. No you can't stop a 4000 lb + vehicle in 6 ft behind my car! Oh, and the idiots that drive on bald summer tires..............!

Yeah, the other drivers are enough of a problem when it rains, when it snows here (the maybe 2 inches max we get every few years) it's as if the world is ending. I just don't like the mess, and I absolutely despise the cold. It's 52 Fahrenheit right now and I'm freezing my rear off  can't stand it!
