Factory headlight glass on the ABM projectors?

Post by Brickbox8398 »

After a two week wait to receive my new/used headlights from eBay…one arrived broken. They were poorly packaged unfortunately. So now I’m out a bunch of money and still don’t have a good set of headlights for this car. They’re being replaced because of the classic “de-silvering” of the reflector in back of the stock headlights. Literally no light makes it to the road. So I am determined to make these projectors work at least for now.

My question is, can I install the factory glass onto the new housings? The stock glass clearly is designed for some kind of beam spread where the projectors of the new ones handles the beam spread hence the clear glass. I think I’m going to try it because it will at least be better than nothing for now.

Pretty sure that the ABM’s use stock glass.
The later model P80 C70’s, 2003 & 2004 with
Jewel headlights used clear glass with no flutes.

Check fit with your fluted lenses, and if they
seal up tight, then you can go shopping.

Here’s an example of the Jewels:

Depo seems pretty popular for complete headlights,
but the glass only may be a little more of a search.

Update. Got the glass swapped out for the stock glass. Very easy to do. I am thankful these headlights are partially serviceable unlike every other car on the market now. No need for a heat gun or risking putting them in the oven. It actually looks alright too! Kind of think it suits my XC better this way with a slightly reserved look but with upgraded light performance. I will add that it doesn’t appear the fluted glass affects the performance, at least in a way that would cause people to flash their high beams at me. I was worried it would scatter light every which way but it seems to work just fine

Should be no issue at all. My p80 ran a projector retrofit in the foglights and the low beams. Used the original glass for both with no issues. The volvo headlights are mounted so low that you could probably aim the lights a little higher with no adverse affects.
