What a great story. I have one, similar, though sadly it contains no Volvos.

When I was 16 I was very anti-authority, pro-punk rock... on my way to those attributes' natural evolutionary result: pro-DIY.

Because I was anti-authority, when my mom said I needed to get home because it was snowing and I was 15 minutes away at a friend's house with the family 1980 Plymouth Horizon Miser (50 MPG highway, $3995 new, 0 options, VW engine, manual, cold vinyl seats, no right-side mirror, no AC, and a AM-only radio), I was angry. I didn't want to go home, I wanted to keep jamming on guitar with my punk friends. It was after school, around 4 pm, Phoenix Maryland.

So I set out with angst in my veins at the parental control over me that had just been exercised over the phone. I came over a hill on Poplar Hill Road in about 2 inches of snow and knew I wasn't going to make the left bend 80 yards down the hill. I did my best, but nosed into the ditch at around 10 MPH. It was enough to break an axle, and even if there was no mechanical failure I wasn't going to be able to back up out of it.

After 30 minutes of waiting, a nice lady in a cool new Toyota Celica manual picked me up and gave me a lift home. She gave me tips on driving a manual in snow during the ride. This Guardian story reminded me a bit of this.
