It would be interesting to know what condition they base this on. My guess is that their sales data refers to pristine collector examples, not everyday beaters. In which case they would not be far off.

99' S70, base, 5-speed manual, nautic blue/ tan, 225k miles, currently inop

Two sales in two years isn't a lot of data points. The three 'reserve not met' tell a story too.

Since this is Hemmings, they are most likely looking at it from a Collector's perspective. Which means pristine low mileage examples. You would not really get much better data, because that market for S70's is super thin. Most of them have just been used up at this point, and the ones out there are mostly mediocre at best. With that in mind, if you wanted to buy one in impeccable condition, the old supply and demand rule would almost dictate a high price.

The $5000 s70 was a family owned low mile unit, Like 70k miles but, reserve not met.

Foggy and I conspired to score KarlaKat from the MD AUCTION but I was 2k in for a Nautic blue s70 AWD with 105k , he put about 10 hours into it so I could drive it home from DC to NY.

The first two fixes on that one were pure, cinnamon-confection-sugar coated luck. It could just as easily have been a scrapper crap shoot.
By the time you got to DC, you had put five times the miles on it than I did, and the Road Service Warranty expired when you landed on the western shore of the Bay Bridge.

I think it was a battery, a caliper, and some ATF.

If you plan on driving home a CAp Auction car on that, you are certifiably insane.

I meant the torn viscous coupler and the DS axle. The cooling lines/o-rings/clips and brake issue &c. were after it was declared UnDead.

I forgot about those. Should’ve written a bigger check
