My 2001 S60 2.0T, "the problem child", is throwing ECM-6440 and I measure infinite resistance at the solenoid. This car has the original Volvo solenoid with "straight" connector, and I have a spare one with the newer "180 degree connector" available.
Problem is that I need to replace the plug to use the new one. Would any one have an advise on what wire to use where? I will simply take the plug from my "spare engine", where the newer solenoid is also fitted.
Connecting "new" type CVVT reset valve

I went on FCP Euro and saw that a replacement solenoid for an 01 is the newer style connector that you mentioned. They give you two red wires and "seem" to say , tie them into your existing wires and go. Its just a solenoid, maybe it doesn't matter which way they are hooked up.
Years back my 01 V70t5 threw a cam sensor code. I went to the local junk yard and pulled a solenoid out of an 02 V70t5. The connector was different on the one year newer Volvo, so I had to cut wires further back so I could take the newer "smaller" connector along with the junk yard solenoid. It was so long ago, I can't really say how I figured out which wire went where. But it worked great.
I soldered the wires in and used heat shrink tubing, then used electrical tape to cover everything up. I see Volvo gives you crimp connectors that are good, if you get a "good" crimp on it. Please don't twist the wires together and tape it up. That just causes problems down the road.

You could try using one of the 9V batteries and connect each side to each wire and see what happens. Volvo used to sell a lead to do this, but now just include it with the CVVT replacement solenoid:

I can't currently find anyone selling a wiring harness update kit other than the Volvo one and 3 different versions that FCP Euro offer aftermarket that include the install kit too. I am wary of the aftermarket ones after a buddies son had an S60 that was loosing oil out the top of the engine which was partly front cam seals, but then the leak continued. The aftermarket solenoid had failed at the joint between the solenoid and the valve and was leaking oil from the joint. I looked to see if I could repair it but the whole solenoid body was out of shape and you could not pull the 2 sections together enough to seal it even with a new o-ring seal. I used an OE used replacement from my stash and it fixed the issue. So watch out with the aftermarket units!
Good Luck!
Neil.

From what I can find are the solenoid controlled by a 200Hz signal, so it should not matter how it is connected, and that would also explain why the kit are deleivered with two red wires. This is also indicated at 13:15 in this videoignatz wrote: ↑12 Feb 2025, 06:19 I went on FCP Euro and saw that a replacement solenoid for an 01 is the newer style connector that you mentioned. Thanks for the help and support.
I chopped of the connector from my -03 spares engine and just hooked it up in my car, installed the new solenoid, and it started up just fine

For how long was I happy... The saga continues
After replacing VVT solenoid the ECM-6440 is gone. But I am now getting ECM-644A while driving, sometimes also CEL. Engine is idling rough when ECM-644A is activated, smooth when I reset the code. It is also hard to start when hot/semi-hot.
Any ideas where to look?
Not sure if this can cause any problem, but when I received the car I changed the oil and filled semi syntetic 10w40 (A3/B3, A3/B4).

Hm. I have gone through a similar issue with an 02 XC70. Never got to the bottom of the issue as it is not my car and access is hard to come by currently.
I changed the solenoid (although it did not show any issues), checked the cam position sensor and it was ok. The car had a timing belt fitted not long before the owner got it so I want to check the timing was set correctly and that the cvvt hub is working correctly using Vida.
I saw this thread on the code you are getting. It may help with the issue you are seeing:
