Vapour blasting is the best method to restore to factory finish but it has to be removed from the car to be done.
Mine was covered in a thick layer of white powder when I bought the car, every time I touched it the powder went everywhere. I tried several different brushes, nylon, rubber, wire, Scotchbrite pad but I found a brass wire brush gave the best results.

When I did the PCV a few years ago, I cleaned the intake manifold and other aluminum parts with a brass brush and alcohol. It was pretty fast and easy and still looks good.

That's probably the best easy solution. I painted an aluminum alternator bracket for my Buick last fall.... still need to install it. I did use an engine paint, so it should last decently. Even on vintage motorcycles, with visible aluminum engines, often times it's only the outer covers that are polished, and the main case halves will be painted.

Well, not my car but one of my friends. His 99 V70 GLT was hit in a parking lot by a careless driver backing up. Of course he has put some money into it recently and it was going well. It needed a rear hatch as it is rusted around the rear wiper motor area which is unusual to me. Don't often see then rusting there.
Anyway, the damage does not look too bad. His only mistake was going through insurance as they will likely write the car off for a low value.
I think he said they offered him $3200 CDN for his car or $2000 CDN if he wanted to keep and repair the car.
Problem is now he has gone through insurance, he has had a hire car as they advised him not to drive it with a broken headlight and sidelight. Our process here is a bit of a bear. You have to get a salvage repair form from a registry office. Then have the car inspected at a salvage inspection business. There they tell you what needs to be repaired and you have to submit a plan of repair. Once repaired you take it back for completeness to the plan if all is good then you pass. Anything they don't like you have to take it away, do the repair and return within 30 days or you have to start over. The cost is around $500 CDN for the process plus a lot of your time. I'm thinking the cost of repairs is less than $1000 easily as he has most of the parts already. Only issue is a colored 426 bumper. There is a chunk out below the headlight but is not structural and hidden mostly by the headlight. They may waive that allowing time to find a bumper cover.
However, he said just before this he was getting a noise from the engine and rough running. It clears up when car is warm and up to speed.
When he had the inspector from the insurance company come to look at it it was really cold. (-20C). He said when he started it up there was a noise and blue smoke and then white smoke. I don't think this is related to the bump as it was at low speed in a parking lot, but may be related to the rough running issue. I'm thinking a valve possibly is burnt but without a lot of time to assess the car it is hard to know.
I'm thinking he may well call it time. It is a shame, but he works long hours so repair time is limited. I have offered to help but he gets a guilt trip when he asks for help. So I think this one may end up at the junkyard unfortunately. I have too many of my own projects to take on another ailing Volvo. The body repairs are easy, the engine issue could be terminal.
Neil.

V70 had been making a whining/groaning sound for a few days, that i attributed to a power steering issue.
Quick read of a few forum posts yesterday pointed out that the alternator going out can send vibrations through the bracket, and i suddenly remembered how the starter felt a little weak earlier coming back from work.
Drove another car today, got back home after a long day, V70 barely started and battery was at 11.2V with the car running, no doubts on the issue !
cue an hour of swapping the alternator i had from the C70 parts car in the dark, with a headlamp. Everything back together, battery plugged back in...wait that's not passing the smell test
Alternator was getting really hot and I even saw a little smoke
Didnt take long to figure out the replacement alternator is shorting to ground
It was working when i took it off the parts car, hoping to find something knocked loose or a bunch of oil when i take it apart tomorrow. Now that i've been reminded how the alternator bolts in, I think I can remove it from the bottom without touching the PS pump (no AC compressor in the way)
