I'll just use some standard stuff from a local parts store. It really only needs to last long enough till the next repair.
Besides, I avoid Amazon like the plague. Of course the parts store probably is getting it through them anyway. :(

Love the $100 Volvo. Every time Abby scoots off to work in her $500 99, now on her 7th year, it warms the heart.

Made some progress over the last couple of evenings. Valves are now all nice and clean. Looking forward to lapping them. I've got to say that the process has been almost therapeutic.

I also finally brought the head into a machine shop for overall checking. The owner gets out his straight edge and feeler gauge. I feel sweat on my forehead.

You know, everybody checks the heads, but no one checks the blocks. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 0.0025 inches warped.

Got the oil pan dropped yesterday. Having my son help made pretty short work of it.
I probably spent more time cleaning the pan then removing it. Easily 4oz of what could best be described as something that we sometimes step in. When I went to drain the oil, a wad of it slowly oozed out of the drain hole, hanging down 4" before letting go and releasing the oil. That bit was a small fraction of what was still in the pan. Way more than the engine could process without clogging the pick up tube.
Very glad that we decided to do this. The only place that there might still be a little sludge is in the oil pump, but anything in there should come out as I rotate the engine crank to set the timing.

Why are people so adverse to maintaining their vehicles? What about just doing oil changes or timing belts? I am regularly dismayed by the number of white block Volvos in the junkyard as their belts have snapped.

Appreciate many are now struggling to make ends meet, but not doing the base servicing on cars is nuts.

Glad to see tis one making it's way back! Makes great reading.
