What is this leak?
2006 XC70. Looking under the car (with the splash pan removed)....oil...It is on the unit (you will tell me the name) that accepts the driveshaft from the passenger side. I assume this is part of the transmission...the shaft enters this unit and it seems that oil may be leaking from that seal. What is it? How horrible is it to change that seal? Can I check fluid to see how much I have lost? Thanks....

Correct, there is a seal there on the driveshaft for the transmission. Check your transmission fluid level. I don't imagine it will be very low. Much discussion in a cn90 thread worth digging up.
Very easy to replace once you have the driveshaft out. Replacing my shift I destroyed this seal and replaced quickly. It wasn't catastrophic.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

If you are getting oil leaking out of the point where the RHF axle enters the angle gear housing then the issue may be there, but it could also be at the seal from the transmission and the collar sleeve to the angle gear. There are 2 seals for the angle gear and an O-ring seal.
So the leak can be either place. Removing the axle is the only way to be sure. This may help visualize the parts used:

If you end up having to pull the angle gear to access the transmission to angle gear sleeve seal on the sleeve, then you may want to check the spline condition of the collar and the angle gear shaft. If the angle gear shaft has good splines, it is worth considering changing the expensive collar to protect the angle gear splines from wear/damage.
Good Luck!
Neil.
