'94 850 na SLR motorsports chip

Post by jtslay »

Hello all, Was wondering if anyone knows about SLR motorsports performance chips for us non-turbo owners. Found them on the web and only $69.00 for added 50 hp and 50 torque. Love my car but seems a little sluggish from stop.

Never heard of them...chipping a non-turbo ECU (I believe) is a bunch of hype. With other ECU's (turbo) you chip to get more "boost." There is no boost to increase in a non-turbo because there is no boost to begin with. Price is cheap and you can try it but don't be surprised if it does virtually nothing.

Chips on NA motors don't add that much...except perhaps more fuel to the mix by moding the curve which improves it a little but then you tend to run rich and burn extra fuel. Do the "warm air intake" modification. It's makes a bigger difference and it's free ;)

Do a search under intake...it's simple...just block the warm side and remove the "dryer" flex type hose from the rear heat shield that routes to the back of the air box.

Here is a good thread that discusses the airbox thermostat.

I've used the Luketrash method on my 2 n/a cars - just wedge it open and forget about it. I used a couple of "scotchlock" wire nuts and it I didn't even need to remove the airbox to make the modification. You can get to it by simply removing the air filter cover.

Hello again, I have successfully converted to cold air intake by following the thread instructions and took the car out for a quick spin around the neighborhood and found a little more power from stop to go. I also got an email back from the SLR Motorsports team and here is what they said. Their chips are vehicle specific and work by adjusting the air/fuel ratio to consume less gas and maximize potential horsepower. It connect to the IAT/AIT sensor plug...... any thoughts? Jason

Still a bunch of hype. If you start changing the air/fuel ratio, very soon the Volvo computer will compensate (as it runs the best ratio) and you're back to square one. Save your money. This might work on some other cars but not on Volvo's. If it did, it would be all over the Volvo forums, and IT'S NOT.

Thanks Madeinjapan, Other than converting to cold air intake, what other mods can I do to my '94 850 N/A wagon?

Sell it and buy a turbo. I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but that is actually the most cost effective path for your if you want more performance. Unless you are going to crack open the head there is really not much you can do to squeeze more out of these NA engines. Even with the head flowed and/or a custom cam grind the ROI will not be worth it.
