First, thank to XC60sailor for this very helpful post - it's still useful today!
I am dealing with the same issue with my 2012 XC60 3.2. At first I was trying to pull out the whole fan shroud assembly, which was looking like a real pain. These photos helped me to see a better way. Very much appreciated!
Also, fwiw, Volvo now sells the controller as a standalone unit. I have one on order from FCP Euro; will get it installed this weekend and should be back on the road. (Now just hoping I didn't kill my battery when the fan ran it completely flat before I realized what was up...)
