For realy dirty fluid it takes around 20-30 quarts to clear up. Anyway, you have a clogged internal filter this is why after a while it stops to pull, the sludge separates from the filter allowing fluid to enter the transmission once more but for a while only.

I would advise you to look for a used tranny. Even if you could clean it up the matter of the fact is, that sludge came from somewhere.

Once you have the new to you transmission in hand…..read mikes post on drilling the clogged filter out. That may well give you a running car and then let you do a trans swap on your schedule of choice.

Here is a diagnostic, too
Interestingly when the trans stopped working I could blow air backwards down one of the cooler lines and manage to get the screen unblocked; it would last until I drove around the block until it blocked again.

What type of external filter are you using? If the internal filter is blocked the trans is toast unless you pierce the casing or remove the trans and disassemble it fully to access the filter, then replace it (you might as well do a full rebuild while you are in there).

You do need some type of filter.

The hack will work only for very little as the dirt will now freely enter ALL solenoids. Blowing air backwards work, and works even better when you backflush with oil, the filter gets "cleaned" and the dirt oozes out slowly from the drain plug(requires some oil expenditure).

I got my junk yard trans today. It’s a little crusty but I’m hopeful that it will get Ruby Sue moving along. Quick question. Do I need to do anything electrically before I start? Like run a diagnostic or something, anything in vida or anything. It would suck to do all the work then not be able to drive the car because I needed to do something before hand. I don’t actually have Vida or a dice unit but plan to get them. Just thought I should ask before doing the manual work part of it.

I posted the message above before I saw the two replies above this one. I have read about the drilling to get to the filter. I am a bit uneasy about doing that as you still can’t get it all the way clean and to me run the risk of knocking a hole in the filter and or dislodging junk to go places it shouldn’t.

I hadn’t read about backflushing with air and fluid but I could easily do that with the junkyard trans out before installation and that sounds perhaps les risky to me.

Should I pull the cover off and inspect the valve body or solenoids while it’s out?

Also, pretty sure my angle gear is leaking. But also the turbo has some oil on it. Could be from that. Could be both lol. No telling.

I’m leaning towards pulling the engine and the trans out together. Not that I want to but I’ve literally driven this thing 12 miles and even though it looks decent under the engine bay I’d like to do any service type jobs I can while I’m this close to having the whole thing out. Pcv, timing belt, address the previously mentioned leak. I can’t really find much as far as guidance to pull the engine/trans for the p2. Anyone have a link?

Sorry for all the questions. I’m just trying to get a game plan together.

Found the sticker for the timing belt. Has 81k miles on it. Could prob wait on that but idk. I haven’t looked in to how difficult it is to do so not sure it would even be beneficial to pull the engine. But again, I can’t find much on pulling just the trans either. I was going to start on it this evening but may hold off.

If I do the whole back flush with air procedure think I could run some sort of cleaner through there too? I’ve never used any solvents or anything aside from an additive in some of my past cars for the trans. But surely someone has marketed a cleaning solution that won’t damage anything? If anyone has any good results I would be interested in hearing what was used. Thank you all so much for the help with this!

When was the timing belt changed? 10 years on time, it is ok on miles.

2017 so should be ok for a bit from what I read as miles is 120k. Thank you for the time reference. I was looking over the junkyard trans and the angle gear collar is pretty rusty. The splines look good though. I’m going to try and clean it up with some fine emory cloth I guess. And pack it full of lube I suppose. If I can’t get it cleaned up I will try and pull the one in there now I guess depending on how it looks too.

Timing belts and components last 160k easily , so put that on the schedule but do it when convenient

Well I fiddled with getting the trans out today for a while. Felt like I made progress but was slow going. These things are really packed together. Pretty difficult to get to some things that’s for sure.

I did manage to get everything out of the way, the axles out and the engine supported. All that’s left is the angle gear, bolts mating the engine and trans, torque convertor bolts and I’m not sure if I’m going to unbolt the steering rack and tie it up or bring it down with the sub frame. Any suggestions as to one way or the other?

Also, I have an engine hoist I can finagle in there to support the trans when dropping it away from the engine but would that be any better than a jack below it? Honestly I’ve never taken a fwd trans out without the engine coming with it. But all the rwd vehicles I’ve done I usually bench press that mug down to my chest and then a dolly. I will say this trans is heavier than I was expecting. And I’m getting older. Just figure a jack under it would suffice. But I may be missing something?

What’s the general consensus on what to do with the angle gear whilst I have it out? Replace fluids? Seals? Every and anything serviceable?

Also a strange thing I noticed while taking everything apart. The grey colored electrical plug next to the pnp switch had trans fluid in it. I tried to search for what that connector is for but had no luck. Any idea as to how or why trans fluid would be in there? Not a ton, but enough for me to see it easily when I unplugged the connector.
