Fuel filter: WIX 33603 vs 33605

Post by beewstew »

It looks like there are two Wix fuel filters that come up for the 2004 xc70. One is 6.5" long, the other 8.25 inches. Both look to have the same ringed/barbed fuel line connections. Is there a reason to choose one over the other? Do they both fit?

Partially Resolved. Filter connections came loose w/ spray lube and 5 minutes of wiggling. Still leaking upstream of the filter - maybe the fuel line or pump connection? Tearing that apart next.

I would ask the tech guys at FCP, I'm fairly sure my 2004 V70 has no external fuel filter, can't find anything , I had it on a lift so I was able to take a good look, nothing.

Can you see a fuel filter ?
If yes, measure it.
If not, you don't have an external one, its in the tank.

Thanks for the motivation to lie in the slush @jonesg !

Per pictures below, my xc70 has a very rusty fuel filter under the rear passenger door. The yellow spot in the snow this afternoon (while shoveling the driveway) looks to be gasoline, I'm hoping from a pinhole leak in the rusty original fuel filter.

Filter body is about 3" long, so the 6" unit is probably standard.

This seems to match the smaller fuel filter that FCP carries https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -8649630kt

Tank side of filter is probably leaking.

Filter must be OE. Body looks to be 3.5" long

It's good you have a bleed valve there to enable you to remove the line pressure. Start spraying those 2 connectors where the filter goes into them. My mechanic friend had a nightmare getting a similarly or possible worse filter off my friends 02 XC70. The connectors are a dumb design. You have to push the 2 buttons on at the same time. Problem was the lower clip gets all the debris from the rust into it which prevents it being compressed to release the connector. In the end he took a large pair of side cutters and cut the 2 pipes off the filter leaving enough to be able to grab with vice grips. Constant cycling of the clip and spraying with penetrant eventually, with use of a small pick, to move the lower clip got it to release. A lot of strong engineering words of persuasion were used in the process!

I would be more concerned why there is tape over that connector. It may have been previously damaged.

As good a reason as any to replace the filter more often in salty places before the filter gets crusty!

I wish you a lot of luck!

Neil.

They come wrapped with tape to stop crud getting in! If it has a pinhole, you won’t need to relieve pressure, it’s self-relieved

:D

That’s a crusty one , are you done with that?

Stainless steel tanks (California thing) have no external fuel filters.

Buy Mahle or Bosch fuel filter from FCP. They also have fuel line repair kits and new bracket.
