1990 740 GL Won't start

Post by dahlio »

My 740 has close to 300,000 miles on it and was working decently for about a year. Only problem was it took a few tries to start it almost every time. Then I was driving and the power to the radio and lights went out and when I came to a stop light the car just died. I towed it to my house and jumped it the next day. It started for a few minutes and then the power went out again and it died. The battery is under a year old. Any suggestions on what is wrong or parts I can replace myself?
Thanks

I think that you have a bad battery, bad quality. It could be a broken circuit inside. It has probably a mechanical problem with the connections between the cells. Those specialist working with batteries can easily check this. If it is less than one year, you hopefully get a new one by warranty. If you have a voltage meter you can do an easy test. Check the voltage at the battery, before starting, it should be close to 12 volt. Start the engine (by jumper if needed) and turn on the headligts to get some power consumtion. Disconnect the jumper. When the speed of the engine is above 1200rpm, you should read minimum 14 volt DC. At idling, it should definitely never go below 11 volt. At idling, the speed is to low for the alternator to charge the battery, so the car has to "borrow" power from the battery. If it is no power in the battery to borrow, the voltage drops below 11 volt and the electronics for the engine will stop working. The engine stops. This is also a good test to see if the alternator is working, the voltage should aproximately increase from 11 volt to 14 volt when increasing the engine rpm from idling to a higer speed.
