On our P80 V70R, my next timing belt is in 9 years and maybe 10k miles! :D

Since 2012 purchase i has managed a whole 18000 km. I have already bought the timing parts for the XC70 as well so hopefully we don't get hit by the pricing. Problem we have in Canada is many of the parts are shipped though the US, so we could get hit by your tarriffs as well! :(

The chaos discussed is not random or accidental. Sudden announcements of major (major) tariff penalties cause stock market shocks and prices drop suddenly. Then a day or so later a delay... or seeming indecision about implementing. Odd behavior it would seem. It would be highly beneficial to some parties to know when those are happening or not happening, so as to jump in or out of the market at the right time for major boosts to their hedge funds etc.

It's right out there in the open, but we're distracted by all the other chaos.

Yes, the consumer price of car parts will go up.
No, they will not go back down if/once/when tariffs are removed.
Yes, there will be huge market uncertainties (in the big picture) and a few insiders will exploit that volatility and get richer(er).

But US citizens want to have less buying power, to reduce the standard of living for most of us. It's what we voted for.

It has the same implications as in the UK when the population decided to have Brexit. Afterwards, when all the foreign nationals up and left, they suddenly realised it was not a good idea after all. Careful what you wish for! (and read the fine print!).

I asked Grok "which auto parts are exempt from reciprocal tariffs?"

I didn't add "USA" to that question obviously, but I'm pretty sure the answer is framed this way, as if I'm asking as a US consumer (which, to my great surprise, I am).

Answer, with my bolds:

"As of April 2, 2025, specific details about which auto parts are exempt from reciprocal tariffs are not fully outlined in a single, definitive list across all available sources, as the policy is still unfolding and subject to clarification from the U.S. government. However, based on the information available, here’s what can be understood about exemptions for auto parts from reciprocal tariffs:
Auto parts that qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are generally exempt from the 25% tariffs announced by President Trump, at least temporarily. This exemption applies until the U.S. Commerce Department, in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), establishes a process to apply tariffs only to the value of their non-U.S. content. This means that for USMCA-compliant auto parts, the U.S.-sourced content is not subject to the tariff, while the non-U.S. content could eventually be taxed once the process is defined. There’s no specific deadline for this process in the sources, though earlier statements suggested it might be clarified by May 3, 2025, for certain parts under the initial auto tariff proclamation.

The White House has indicated that the reciprocal tariffs announced on April 2, 2025—referred to as "Liberation Day" tariffs—do not apply to products already subject to existing tariffs, such as those under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (e.g., steel and aluminum tariffs from 2018) or the earlier 25% auto and auto parts tariffs that took effect on April 3, 2025. This suggests that auto parts already covered by these prior tariffs are not additionally impacted by the new reciprocal tariffs, though they remain subject to the existing duties unless specifically exempted under USMCA rules.

Key auto parts mentioned in the context of the initial 25% tariffs (effective April 3, 2025) include engines, transmissions, powertrain parts, and electrical components. These are not explicitly exempt from tariffs unless they meet USMCA criteria with U.S.-sourced content. However, posts on X and some news reports from April 2, 2025, suggest a broader exemption might apply to auto parts regardless of origin under the reciprocal tariff framework, though this lacks confirmation from official White House documentation in the provided references. For instance, a post on X claimed CNBC confirmed that "auto parts are exempt from the reciprocal tariffs no matter where they are coming from," but without a verifiable source, this remains speculative.

In summary, auto parts exempt from reciprocal tariffs as of now include:

USMCA-compliant parts with U.S. content, until a process is established to tax non-U.S. content.

Parts already subject to existing Section 232 or April 3, 2025, auto tariffs, as they are not layered with additional reciprocal duties.

The exact scope of exemptions remains fluid, and further details may emerge as the Commerce Department refines its processes or as additional White House clarifications are released. For a precise list, you’d need to await an official Federal Register notice or updated guidance from the administration, which has not been fully detailed in the sources available up to this date."

Maybe Trump can now re-hire all the people he let go from all the government departments to figure and run the processes to figure this out, especially the Vets? I'm sure the cost of running all those people will about balance the tariffs raised.

Similar to here in reverse. I didn't see a bunch of government getting their pink slips after Canada dropped the carbon tax. they hired a whole bunch of additional staff to run this process.

Don’t spend too much life worrying about this. In 30 days , the toddlers toys will have been picked up and he will throw them again. Focus on things that matter.

It’s a common misconception that tariffs are based on ship point, when in fact it’s in origin and content of goods.

Hint to my Red friends…it’s better to google ‘tariffs’ before you vote, not after.

Hats off to Canada , last round they reciprocated by banning targeted products aimed at Red states. That was slick.
