figuring out what i can do about a seized lower u joint,
I tried checking around but could not find too much on people attempting to rebuild it.

Given the scarcity of p80's, i was hoping there would be a way to rebuild the joint. I assume it seizes at the needle bearing, and was wondering if anyone has successfully removed said bearing or done some kind of measurements. I know its a faff to get these off, but with the rarity of p80's i would like to see if there was a sustainable way.

Another gripe i found is that i need to do 2 fuel pumps and cant find a fuel pump ring tool in canada. Only in the states, and the great powers that be would double the tax on it :). We will see how it goes.

What a pain. I tried looking for CTA tool # 7882 but nothing shows up in Canada.

Now I need to find the tool myself. Can't recall what I used the last time. I think it was a pair of flat blade screw drivers or large channel locks.

Im working to see if i can get a family member to order some and bring them back up to Canada sans the labels. I would 1000% order from a Canadian retailer if they sold this part. However, these companies seem to be headquartered in the USA while producing the parts overseas (CTA tools). I have done the screw driver trick too, but we invented tools for a good reason on this. I dont have a welder yet, so dropping 25usd on a tool does not feel as bad if i use it multiple times at a spot far away from normal stores. Ill report back once i get it ordered.

At this time, it seems the cheapest we can get these 25usd tools is 81 cad from CTA tools + duties and fees, or 106 cad from JBtools with shipping that states it covers duties and taxes. I am not sure our new tarrifs are covered under that. Remember, duties and taxes are flat rate 11 handling from Canada-Post + tarrifs+duties. I suspect it comes close to 106 all things in as the CBSA website puts the non US origin import at 10.37cad with the past metrics. So at best its 102 cad vs 106 cad.

The exchange rate puts 34ish usd (taxes + shipping included) for USA delivery at 44 cad. It hurts that we are effectively paying 2x+ for a part that cost 5$ to make in Taiwan :P

How about trying Alibaba or Temu?

Checked Alibaba and no dice so far. Same for temu. They only have the generic ones, and if we are pulling spare pumps later and changing them then i can justify the logistics of getting it. Might see if i can order it to a friend and have them bring it back up to us. Will report back on the plans.

Recap of my Sunday project:

My V70 has the dreaded driver side door catch damage.
Weld spots in A Pillar failed and pre owner apparently tried to weld it before. It was time to do something about it.

You can see the cracks in the area around the catch hinge and the repair welds.
IMG_20250406_145408__01.jpg
Cleaned that up as good as it gets with a belt grinder.
I decided to go with a bolt-on support bracket where the hinge attaches to. Since the weld spots were reasonably rigid they got drilled to hold the bolts.

I went with a 1mm gauge piece of ST37. Cut and ground to fit plus gave it a bend around the A-pillar for stability. Idea was to leave room for the Door connector rubber seal too.

It is moments from here that I realize both the catch joint and the strap bolt will interfere with the 3 o'clock bolt head upon door installation. Ended up thinning the allen bolt on the lathe to clear the 3 o'clock bolt and loosening the nuts on the catch only enough to push it indoors a little to get the the catch joint past bolt into the hinge.

I am satisfied with the result. What would I do differently the next time? 1. Thicker gauge metal to get rid of the flex for good. 2. Avoiding catch strap interference to bracket bolts. 3.Taking off the fender right away!

Nice job! Hopefully that will take care of it for good!

It looked like it had been well looked after. It also had under 90k miles on it! It was a sedan in that lovely aquamarine bluey/green color. Even the seats were in great condition.
I hate seeing cars in the junkyard that could have easily been kept in service because people just don't want to bother or don't have the resources to keep them going, even when they're donating parts to keep mine on the road.

I wouldn't mind but no one wants to even try to see if there is anyone interested to buy to repair, and that I understand as so many people out there these days are idiots and give sellers a hard time and they don't want to be bothered with that. But the other side of me wishes they would let potential enthusiast buyers at least a chance to buy these cars and not send to the crusher.

My mechanic buddy has just gone more crazy and just bought what was a nice C30 T5 R-design that the young owner loved. The car was the victim of a hit and run which trashed the rear bumper and bent the rear quarter. Car still runs and drives. The owner s insurance will write the car off. Buying this this way the car has no salvage title and my buddy will repair it for his own use.

I also saw a 00 V70XC for sale for $400 over in B.C. Where it was for sale I have a Volvo enthusiast friend who has a shop out in that town. I gave her the heads up and she knew of the car. I understand she has saved it as I have just had some questions on how to fix one of the issues (a stuck tailgate latch).

So there is hope for some of these cars!!
