Hello,
This will be a long one but I hope you can bear with me. The car is a Volvo V70 2004 (model year 2005) with a D5244t, 455 000 km on the clock.
A few weeks ago a colleague of mine put petrol in the car instead of diesel. The car ran for a few minutes, then stalled. All the petrol was pumped out and the fuel lines, tank and engine got flushed. New diesel was put in the tank. After that, the car ran but had developed a slight rattling noise when the engine is warm. I went to a Volvo mechanic who said it's probably the injectors making that noise and it will be fine to run the engine for now but to be aware that the injectors will need replacing or revision in the future. Also, sometimes it would take a bit more cranking than usual to get the engine started.
All was fine until yesterday, after a 30-minute drive on the highway, I stopped for 5 minutes and then the car had a really hard time starting. It would start after a while of cranking only to stall again some seconds later. On the fourth attempt, the engine started and kept on running. Drove another 10 minutes and parked the car. Then I replaced the fuel filter which was something I needed to do anyways and after that the car won't start anymore. I managed to get the engine running twice but it stalled again some seconds later.
Today, I tried again. I primed the fuel by turning on the ignition for 10 seconds 20 times in a row, still nothing. I called a mechanic. No luck either. We got the car to run on starter fluid and a while later, on some attempts the engine would run again for maybe 10-15 seconds before stalling. The mechanic hooked up an OBD device and found out that the fuel pressure is too low when cranking and too high when the engine gets running.
So I would assume the problem lies somewhere either in the injectors, high pressure fuel pump or common rail? Has anyone had a similar experience or could direct me where the problem might be?
And I guess the most important question: after running petrol in the engine, is it doomed? Will I be replacing most of the parts one by one since they will fail sooner than expected?
Thanks in advance!
