Start with simple things. Verify fuel pressure. Should be pretty much dead on at 58 PSI. Plan to or just go ahead and replace upstream oxygen sensor. It's a major part of a closed loop mode of engine operation. Bosch, who makes them, says to replace it every 100k miles.

If you plan to keep your old Volvo, DiCE and VIDA is pretty much essential.

2004 might be a split year, some have a PEM and some don't, my 04 has no PEM so no way to read fuel pressure through VIDA.
When you can smell raw fuel, is it coming from the engine bay or , more likely, the driver side wheel well.?

it really points to the top of the fuel pump, no PEM means its a plastic tank and the original pumps in those tanks were almost sure to crack and leak out the top. If so, you can either reinforce the top of the pump with JBWeld or replace the pump, I glued mine 8 yrs ago and its still good. Take the savings and buy a working copy of VIDA.

Hello - Lots of questions and details missing to give an answer.

2004 V70s were part of a fuel sender unit recall: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2009/R ... 3-8017.pdf depending on where the car lived. Hot places got the recall because the plastic was failing with high heat.

Do you have a black plastic fuel tank or a silver colored metal fuel tank?

The fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel delivery module inside the fuel tank. Most car manufacturers moved it to the fuel tank when returnless fuel systems were implemented.

Do you have access to a fuel rail pressure gauge as prior posters asked? That is the first step to figure out if you have a fuel supply problem or a sensor problem. Swapping parts doesn't determine the problem unless you just get lucky.

Hey thanks for that letter of recall!! I def will look into that more. After doing more and more research online and looking the car over I believe it may be the fuel pump itself. The fuel smell is coming from inside the car I can’t really 100% tell we’re exactly it is coming from but I did remove the back seat to access the pump hatch and now it smells even more like fuel inside the car. The old mechanic told me what needed to be replaced was the sending unit in top of the pump itself so in the next few days I have a new pump coming in. I reaaaly hope it will fix it!. My V70 does have the rare metal tank sooo finding vidz online has been almost impossible. I was thinking of making a replace video and tossing it online for others who have have to replace there pump. Fingers crossed this will work and fix my problems I also wanted to ask, does anyone know the bolt size for the presser sensor in the engine bay? I sorta dropped mine lol. I just was checking here but couldn’t find anything about the size of the bolt

I went through the service records of the previous owners and both of those haven’t been replaced yet.

vida is service software program, dice is the OBD to USB interface.

"Boot and go" ( vida on a USB stick) is a decent method if you have a laptop with 4MB of ram.

If you forget to disconnect the battery and pull the seats out you'll need vida to clear the SRS code it will set.

Hey everyone! Wanted to give an update. So I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump. It was at my sisters house so pretty much every morning I drove out to do a little here and there work on it b4 I went to work. So anyways I replaced the pump, put everything back and drove it home from work. (30 miles or so) I didn’t have a single issue. Then the next morning I went to go to work. I pulled out of my drive way and instantly it stalled out. I fired it up again, it started then again rpms dropped and stalled. I got it back to my drive way, unplugged the battery and retraced my steps incase to see if there was anything I missed and ya I missed an important plug I believe. After somewhat tracing it it looks like it goes to the port of the fuel pump but up top maybe above the fuel tank? Here is a pic of the plug I forgot to plug in. Does anyone know what this goes to? And did I fry my pump?
