My car drives fine, I spent about 4 hrs on the interstate yesterday. After I was home yesterday when I put the car in reverse will not go more than one tire revolution in reverse. It feels like something is blocking the rear passenger rear wheel. I hear a sound and I feel resistance and the wheel will not rotate any more. I really don't feel like putting down the gas to see what that will do. When I put the car in Drive and roll forward a couple feet I can once again put the car in reverse and the car can back up again, but once again it only does this appx (1) tire revolution. Anyone ever had this problem? I am assuming that it is the brakes, and I am thinking the parking brake because there is no problem with the brakes in drive. I think that I would hear it if the brake pad had an issue. I have an appt at my local mechanic, but I am really hoping that I might be able to fix this myself in the meantime. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I do not see anything unusual as it sits. I plan on jacking up the car and removing the rear wheels to see but I have not had the time yet.

Methinks you'll find the brake shoe delaminated , jammimg the works,
I paid around $60 a few yrs ago for shoes, a mechanic might charge $300+.
Do both sides, new spring retainer kits too.

Or worse. You could have the raised aluminum 'foot peg' snapped off. They corrode due to the interaction of the steel parking brake shoes and the aluminum peg and road salt. Only thing to do is remove the rear rotor and look and see what is going on. I would recommend not driving the car until repaired either way as it could lock the rear wheel completely as happened to my buddies son.
Only 2 options if it is the worst case scenario:
1) Get a good un-corroded rear hub from a junkyard
2) There is an aftermarket repair kit sold by Skandix in Germany, but there used to be one in North America, can't recall if it was Dorman that sold one.
I'm hoping for delaminated parking brake shoes or jammed parking brake cable!
Neil.

Thank you both so much. I am going to take off that tire and see if I can figure out what it is. I am not sure if I have the option of NOT driving it but I can certainly minimize it. I live about 2 miles from work and may be able to limit it to about 6 miles a day until I drop it off at my mechanics (assuming that I cannot do it myself before). My mechanic is mid way between work and home so.

Heres how it went for me, I figured its a 90 minute job.
Jack the car up, forgot to break the lug bolts loose, lower the car again, got the bolts loose, jack the car up, place on jackstands, the wheel won't come off.
Lower the car again and put the lugs in finger tight, drive the car back and forth a couple of feet to break the wheel loose from the hub.
Jack the car up again and remove the wheel.
Remove the caliper and hang from a coathanger.
Brake disk won't come off, fight with it. eventually popped off, hammers pry bars etc.
Brake shoe falls out in bits.
Order or go pick up new shoes.
Springs are shot, get brake kit.
Get the new shoes in place, its easy, just need to wipe the blood up from the shoe.
Everything back in place, emergency brake still won't lock car in place, I know it will fail inspection.
Tightened the Ebrake cable at the lever, and....the cable adjuster broke.
Ordered new cables and adjuster. around $140 , I forget. Old cables were stretched out.
Still no bite on the new shoes, removed and compared to the original volvo shoes, very slight difference, I cleaned the paint off the shoe backplate slots with a file to make it fit the H spacer bar a bit easier, now it works better.
Sprayed the shoes and brake disk surface with brake kleen, installed wheel and set parking brake loose, drove it 100 yards to mate the surfaces.
Yours should go easier.
Took me over a week, thats why the mechanics make the money.

That’s a rough job, but do remember the shop was backed up 4 weeks so you are 3 weeks ahead

I went under the car to try and get a better look after all of the feedback and then talking to my neighbor. I did not see anything that looked odd/out of place. I had not operated the parking brake since my last oil change a couple months ago but decided to engage and disengage it to see what would happen since I was almost certain that it was something in the parking brake. The car was now able to back up without issue. It did not dawn on me to try that because I had not engaged the parking brake. I am going to take this as an indication of something that needs to be serviced soon. Kits on ipdusa are almost $400. Is it advisable to replace the cables when doing this? I am guessing yes. I am going to get a quote from my mechanic now that I know what it is. I will get everything for a brake job just in case it is close when I get everything off.

engage ther ebrake, blip the throttle lightly in D, does it hold.
It should move slightly but not roll.
If so then the cables are fine, if not tighten the adjuster under the center console.
Once the adjustment is all used up with no more threads the cables are stretched out.
Its not something you want to do unless necessary, pain pulling the rugs and center console out.

It does hold when I engage the park brake. It does not roll like it did. I have an appointment for my mechanic to get it on a lift and take a look at it so at least I have a professional opinion if anything looks like it needs to be done or not. I will also have them look at my brakes at the so I know how long I have before I need a brake job.
